Looks thike the article was right on:

What Job You?ll End Up With: Thanks to your extensive knowledge of philosophy, you?re now self-aware enough to know that most jobs out there will make you totally miserable. So most likely you?ll be doomed to a carer in the adult industry. Jet setting around the world, playing beer pong and most importantly, making sure making sure the dildo closet is stocked for feature shows.

I have two friends from UW who majored in Philosophy. One is currently attending Columbia Law, and the other is in UCSD getting his degree in environmental law.

It's a starter degree that teaches you high logic, reason and causality...no real world applications my ass :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Bdiddy 06-05-2008 08:46 AM

The rest of the list is pretty good though lol

The article is about where you will be working if you have that degree, not where you will go to school (and for what) after you get that degree.

That article was very accurate. Lots of fucking haters in here.

The TITLE is "The 10 Most Worthless College Majors" and here's a quote from the author in the intro:

Quote:

Here?s a list of 10 degrees that may be interesting, but do jack shit for you in the real world.
If a degree helps you get accepted into prestigious law schools, it's not worthless.
If said degree helps you get into law schools where a median salary is 155,000* dollars a year in the private sector, it does indeed to shit for you in the real world. :thumbsup

From the perspective of "Can I get a decent paying job after I graduate?", his comments seem right on target... Some on that list are probably better than others, but most of them, like Latin or Art History Major for example, like he said will have pretty hard time finding a decent paying job to support his/her family...

Students of these majors will all gain useful skills, and without a doubt will be better off than people without degrees, but unless they have rich parents with a trust fund lined up for them, and are going to school just for fun, they would be better off picking a better degree that will guarantee decent income and job security in the future...

That's a bit of a stretch, I don't think it's typical for a philosophy degree to go to law school. Many probably do, but it's not most by any means... It's almost like arguing that Honda Civic is a fast car, and offering as an example "My friend put in twin turbo in it with a nitrous kit, and now it's faster than any car on the road"...

"Worthless" in the title refers to relative usefulness of a degree compared to all other degrees, it doesn't mean literally that these degrees are actually worthless... :2 cents:

Interesting counter. My point is more about what a person actually takes from the degree. (Logic, comprehension, reason, and causality) This translates well into many pre master program tests (LSAT's, Series tests for stock brokers are another example) very well as these are the skill sets required.

Of course, many Phil majors DO fit the mold of pot smokin' slackers, but that's not the degrees fault! You'd be surprised at how many do go to law school, teaching, or choose a career path that uses their talents. If they can handle the subsequent tests (again, not the degrees fault)

- "It's almost like arguing that Honda Civic is a fast car, and offering as an example "My friend put in twin turbo in it with a nitrous kit, and now it's faster than any car on the road"..."

All Doctors, teachers, and most businessmen have to 'supercharge' their initial degrees as well. Interesting discussion :)

I studied philosophy for some years, and am starting med school in the fall. Most people I know who studied philosophy either went into IT, law or business, with a few going into academics, politics or teaching.

Philosophy essentially teaches logic and argumentation. Those are rather important things in contemporary society.

This is probably a bit off topic, but I thought medical school requires strong background in life sciences, chemistry, etc, kind of classes. Did you take many of those when you were in school? or is there some quick 1 year pre-med period, where one takes some classes to get caught up on that stuff?

phypon 06-05-2008 11:43 AM

If philosophy is such a great degree, why the need for a completely different degree?????

(my bad, is that illogical?)

:winkwink:

sniperwolf 06-05-2008 12:10 PM

quite true. I just wonder why Philosophy belongs there?

Kard63 06-05-2008 12:50 PM

fact #1: A lot people who get a degree in Philosophy are a double major.

fact #2: Learning philosophy can help you in life

fact #3: The people in this thread trying to take the list in a way that wasn't as intended are fucking lame. REAL FUCKING LAME!!! stfu noobs! We are not talking about taking philosophy classes, going to grad school, or any fucking thing else other than your earnings potential if you are looking for a fucking job right now. FUCK YOU FOOLS!

Too many god damn amateur ass philosophers in here.

Are you the author or something? Taking it awfully personal. Here's one:

fact #4: your fact #3 is an opinion, not a fact.
