Friend needs advice about obscenity laws

A friend of mine is shooting BDSM oriented content, and he doesn't know much about obscenity laws (like what is allowed and what isn't). I don't know anything either, and I was wondering if there is someone here who could help us (well, really, him) out when it comes to the subject of obscenity laws.
