For everybody bitching about Vista I have the SOLUTION

http://exo-blog.blogspot.com/2008/03...one-right.html

I did pretty much this exact same mod when I was stuck on win2k instead of XP because of the same complaints we all had with XP BACK THEN we're now having about Vista. My solution back then was to run a modified server 2003.

All of the parts for my new workstation should be here today/tomorrow and this weekend I will be building. I'm planning on dual booting either XP or 2008 server with ubuntu but ubuntu is on this workstation which is going to be moved over to focus on server duties and then I'll probably migrate over to 70/30 splitting mainly to the windows side instead of the ubuntu side like it is now.

After a bit of reading on windows 2008 workstation I've decided to give it a try as a main OS for the 60 day trial and then using the hack to renew for more days.

there's already docs in place to get aero and plenty of other things to make this just like Vista only faster. I'm going to dive into the 64 bit version because I'm STARTING with 4Gb RAM and will expand to 8Gb eventually.

Driver support and gaming does appear to be somewhat shady at this time for server 2008 BUT if your focus is actually to WORK this might be a decent alternative for you.

what is the problem with vista again? I have run it since the start and have had ZERO problems...if your 5 year old hardware doesn't work maybe get some new hardware

Vista seems to run fine on some machines and others it does not regardless of if they are new or old. I ordered a mac the other day. I am a little sick of pcs and microsoft after all these years, why not give the competition a try?

I have tried vista on a new fast laptop and it sucks. Slow, bloated POS.

I would go with apple but the cost of getting a serious system is so expensive compared to building my own.

after spending more time with windows server 2008 I've gotta say it is certainly faster than Vista and I haven't had any compatibility problems yet with anything I've tried! I really wish they'd just put this out to replace Vista "Professional" at least.

Vista is the best consumer Windows OS so far. By far. Everybody who cries about it is to dumb to tweak it. And thats a fact.

I have the brains to tweak it... a tweaked out XP is still better but a tweaked out server 2008 is even better.

My Windows XP tweaking guide was read by more people than any other guide out there. The first day I posted my 1.1 update 250k UNIQUE IP's hit it but obviously this was quite a while back ;) I kind of miss my tech writing days sometimes (market just doesn't pay so well anymore)
