Not too long ago we did a website for a bunch of street fighters out West. Nothing fancy, just an informational site with a phpbb board. They do Thai Boxing, Karate, Boxing, etc. in old warehouses and have people watch for a fee. No gloves, no rules, just good ol' ass kicking.

Yesterday their capo calls me, a little upset, saying someone fucked his website up. (good thing he is 2000 miles away, I wouldn't ant to be around when he's upset...).


Some jackass spambot operator had created about 1200 profiles signups with links to websites, and has posted about 500 spam messages. We installed a script to remove the signups and did a captcha verification, so the booboo is all better now.

Anyway, the boys are very upset and are asking my computer geek now to find out who the idiot was, and we keep telling them it's not possible, even though we know it is possible under certain circumstances.

How can people be so stupid? You don't want to fuck with these guys for a bunch of backlinks to viagra sites and affiliates, don't you, so let it be, will ya?

You would have a point, except I train and fight MMA, with a record of 1-1-0 my first year, last year. I know for a fact, every guy who comes walking in at my academy looking like that gasses out in less than a minute, first hand me being the guy who taps them out.

A spambot is a script, it has to be set-up to work properly. It doesn't have its own mind and runs around on the Internet to do it's dirty work. Setting it up to target a new board typically requires a human individual that is smarter than you, because many phpbb boards are configured differently.

Also, I don't appreciate you dumb ass remarks about these guys, you don't even know them. They are good guys, the fact that they are not computer literate doesn't automatically mean they are less worth than you. Your repeated derogatory comments come across as jealousy, nothing less.

If you know your shit so well then you would also know that spambots get sold with a database of 2000 boards and some kids buys it and runs it. Hes not exactly visiting those 2000 sites to see if there are caveman boards.

actually frank is right, chances are the spammer didnt even see the forum or know who or what it is about.

I have made these toys before. ( purely for educational purposes :) ) first a harvester strips forums from google using criteria to isolate default configured versions of phpbb, at best the wm might glance at the list of forum urls.

but to answer your original question , yes thats exactly the type of site and guy someone would mess with even if they did see the site and/or his pic. Why not ? most dedicated spammers are likely more nerd than jock , and he looks more jock than nerd, when else can a nerd rip on a jock than to spam the shit out of his forum knowing he can't do shit about it . kinda like jocks do to nerds in high school :)

I don't think he's right in this case. The site hasn't been up for long. We don't have phpbb in the URL and have actually changed the forum URL twice within 10 days for other reasons, so it's very unlikely that it appears in databases.

I think it's more what you said after, that somebody got a kick out of fucking with these guys, because even from a real spammer's point of view the action makes little sense. Why would someone try to destroy someone else's shit, unless there was a reason, which there wasn't, unless it's a simple ego-problem?

Talking about ego, it's amusing how some of the supposedly "educated" computer geeks in here, who probably grew up in the Hamptons, with mama putting a Cleenex under their pillow every evening (in case big boy has an ejaculation) now get all upset. It is more likely that it was an attack on the specific forum.

But the people who admin the forum are newbs to allow that to happen.

phpbb wass a poor choice. i ran phpbb on xratedboard.com for a while, and the spambots hit me hard. i wound up with an sql db over a gb that was grinding my server to a fuckign stand still....
