...pics of Actual God's own southern barbecue coming very soon in this thread.

While these can produce true food works of art...

...they are useless for BARBECUE.

Propane grills are even worse.

okok 05-25-2008 08:18 PM

Getchoo some baby back ribs and slather on summa this:

okok 05-25-2008 08:19 PM

Then a generous coating of this hyeah:

Yeahhhhh. Bad Byron makes the good stuff.

okok 05-25-2008 08:25 PM

Fire up your smoker.

http://www.valismedia.com/personal/smoker.jpg

Yeah, it's ghetto cheap and needs bricks to keep the covers down. It's crucial that your smoker is piece of shit.

Get that bad boy up to about 280 F with charcoal and a few chunks of apple and hickory wood. Enter the meat.

okok 05-25-2008 09:00 PM

Mix you up some moppin' sauce. I like half apple juice, half cider vinegar.

okok 05-25-2008 09:04 PM

Splash that mop on your ribs every 45 mins or so. Here they are an hour in:

http://www.valismedia.com/personal/Reeeibs.jpg

They still need another 3-4 hours, so don't get hungry yet.

okok 05-25-2008 09:06 PM

Keep drinking these:

http://campandbrew.com/cb/images/miller-lite.JPG

This is also crucial.

okok 05-25-2008 09:20 PM

Here's another picture after the first hour. Glad I switched from the phone cam, yeah?

http://www.valismedia.com/personal/mustardsauce.jpg

...and wrap those bitches up to go another hour or so.

Nismo 05-25-2008 11:11 PM

damn, you only smoked those for 4 hrs? they look good, but not black enough :)

i do a similar style, okok - except i smoke 'em for about 7-8hrs, slower & less heat. i soak pork sholders/butts in brine the night before.

and i use bad byron butt rub. thats badass shit.

I did a "4-1-0" vs. a "3-2-1." Mostly because I couldn't keep the temp as low as I wanted, but they turned out decent.

I'll do a butt a ton slower and lower, no diggity.

okok 05-25-2008 11:46 PM

Just out of the smoker:

Torontonians don't know what BBQ is it sucks.

Peaches 05-26-2008 02:16 PM

You put any product from "Sonnys" on a good piece of meat??!! Anyone in the south means Sonny's "BBQ" is nasty, nasty, nasty :(

pornguy 05-26-2008 02:17 PM

I prefer the steaks on the grill.

Perhaps -- despite your exaggeration -- but when you're away from the southeast for a long time, it's easy to reminisce. For instance, I would much rather go to Sonny's than to any chain restaurant or self-proclaimed barbecue shack on the west coast.

Redmanthatcould 05-26-2008 02:59 PM

Have you been to Dr Hogly Wogly's in the Valley or http://mclintocks.com/ in SLO?

Probably still don't compare...but they are good :)

Nah but I have heard good things about Dr. Hogly Wogly's. I think it's not too far and it has been recommended to me by trusted folk on matters such as this.

J. Falcon 05-26-2008 03:48 PM

You guys have no real idea what a real grill looks like. Fuck your gas and charcoal shit.

I'm pretty sure you could make some decent BBQ sauce with a recipe off the interwebs :) Heck, if you're stuck in a premade rut, there are about 10000 better sauces than Sonnys. I don't know anyone but tourists that even eat there and I've lived at least 35 years in cities/states that had at least one.

Most of them are closed now - thank goodness. The other day I was with someone and we were amazed at how many cars were parked in front of a GA Sonnys. Seems it's now a used car lot. :thumbsup

~Ray 05-26-2008 07:00 PM

1/3 cattleman's original

1/3 sweet baby ray's

1/3 trappy's hot sauce

stir, lather, oh my.

davecummings 05-26-2008 08:15 PM

Because of this GREAT thread, I was driven to have BBQ these past three days (all from different BBQ places here in San Diego) ----good stuff!!!!

Thanks,

Dave
