I thought namecheap was good but...

I put in a support ticket into namecheap as I renewed a whoisguard subscription that was currently on a soon to expire (or probably already has) .co.uk domain and wanted to transfer it to another .co.uk domain. However in the drop down menu to add the subscription to a domain all I could see was the old domain not the one I wanted to transfer it to. Guess what reply I got from Irma at NC support?

Hello,
Unfortunately, if you use the Whoisguard with these domains, you will still show as being listed as the registrant.
We would advise you to contact nominet and use their "opt Out" feature. They sometimes will delete a domain if it has privacy protection.

OK maybe I didn't put my question in the correct terms but WTF? Is all my details public? I don't care too much about my real name as it's not exactly unique but my address and phone number too? Why sell these things with domains if anyone can still use whois to get my personal details???

ive never used them

it is easy to do first you have to release the whois from the domain then assign it to a new domain

Namecheap has no control over the .co.uk registry. They can't block your info.

If they have no control over .co.uk domains why are they selling whoisguard subscriptions for them then? Am I wrong in thinking that whoisguard subscriptions are meant to stop people from looking at my personal details? or is it just some trendy new way to waste money?

I stand corrected. Well, I was right, in general, but I didn't realize they even sold .co.uk domain names..

so yeah - that's pretty fucked up.

OK time to eat humble pie it seems whoisguard subscriptions don't cover .co.uk domains and the old domain was a .com (I hadn't looked at it in months lol)

But still according to namecheap I'm meant to contact nominet to "opt out" thing is though how am I meant to sign into their site if I've only ever dealt with namecheap? I've had one crappy letter from nominet in over a year and after half an hour spent looking for it the site says the details no longer work because they changed something :mad::mad:

I'm off to have another beer and a heart attack. Enjoy your weekend :)
