Anyone in Japan?

Thinking of making the move there. What's the upside and downside?

Bad side is you will run into a lot of racism if you do not look Japanese. It will be subtle at first, but you will start to notice it more and more as time goes on. They are SLOWLY starting to make some society changes as greater pressure is put upon them by the international community, but they are a xenophobic society, and that will take decades more to change.

Well, I certainly don't look Japanese. So maybe I need to look else where.

A lot also depends on the area you stay in. There are areas that are much more friendly to Gaijin.

what are some examples of the type of things that you would run into in a regular day kind of occurence as far as racism goes?

you will have to face a lot of Bush, instead of just one.

There are many hotels that will deny you service. Expect to see arms crossed in an X and the words "Japanese Only" a lot. Almost every Yakuza "spa" aka whore houses (which most all are Yakuza run if they have real Japanese girls) you will get the same treatment. Expect to get dirty looks from older Japanese people while riding the trains, some restaurants will also deny you service. Its varying from place to place, and situation to situation.

My boyfriend has recently got it in his head that he'd like to teach English there, and since one of my best friends recently moved there as well it's possible that it could happen. Anyhow, I was looking around the internet and found this - http://thejapanfaq.cjb.net/ - supposed to be a FAQ for moving to/living in Japan.

Who knows if we'll actually end up there, though.
