i used pinnacle studio for a few years and last year i bought vegas 7 because i'm a huge fan of sony video products. to be honest, i had a hard time learning the program. part of the problem is i didn't know anyone who used so i couldn't get quick tips and i don't have alot of free time to learn another application. i'm very proficient with studio but i think vegas would have fewer quirks.

Once you get past the differences is the way Vegas does things I think anyone would have no problems with it. It is super easy to do complicated things when compared to other programs. If you are using something else like Avid, or Premiere then you will probably need to take an hour or so looking at the basic tutorials on the Sony site just to get the buttons and such. But once you get that straight it's super smooth sailing! I'm pissed it took me so long to try it out.
Plus there are lots of good tutorials on youtube too for those interested.

FYI, i think vegas 8 is the only version compatible with vista. i tried installing my vegas 7 version on vista and kept getting a messaging saying i needed to install "windows 2000 service pack 3 or higher".

Thats just it - my wife downloaded it from the sony site - trial version - so she could use it with our home camera as we take videos of our kid growing up. Its the only version that works with vista 64bit - now we're stuck because trial is up and the package is close to 700$ here in canada

I tried to find out what the differences were between the expensive package Sony offers and the ~150 one, and it seemed like the more expensive one was geared more towards people with HD video cameras who were shooting stuff themselves and editing.

I don't really need to mess with all that, so I went with the cheaper version.

the difference (i think) is that you dont get the box & packaging - just a cd in a sleeve

this is standard "OEM" type packaging and most software can be legally purchased for MUCH cheaper than the retail package when buying OEM

But we do have a HiDef video cam (sony) but the software that comes with it wont work on a 64 bit vista system. Are you saying this cheaper software may not work with the hidef cam we have?
