I need a new deck for my car...

Any suggestions? I know nothing about this stuff. And honestly, I really don't want to spend all that much money. I would say $200 max.

Sly 05-16-2008 04:44 PM

Oh, it needs to have an input for MP3 players. Just a regular headphone jack.

Crutchfield is a good source to use, good prices and they ship. I like Pioneer and
Clarion but I haven't ever purchased a $200 head unit before so I can't tell you what is good or not.

you need at least 4 good speakers, and a subwoofer is a good idea too (but you won't be able to do all that for 200)

decks are cheap nowadays, although I don't know about your "regular headphone jack" idea, I think that is a bit odd

This looks pretty perfect. What I really need is the iPod connection port... though I'm wondering, will that work with other MP3 players as well? I would need something to work for both an iPod and a Zune, if possible.

paid 400 for my deck, 450 for door speakers and 600 for sub and amp and I drive a 2000$ car haha

I didnt know car's had decks.

I reccomend using real wood however there are some other good stuff as well called Trex and thats long lasting.

ok, forget about the ipod and zune concept, the best way to do it is to buy yourself a usb flash drive (they are under $15 for 2gig usually), stick it in your computer and you can fill that up so full of all of your mp3's, you plug that in and the deck accesses it all.... it plugs in to the same slot that an ipod would.... any half ass deck nowadays has a jack to plug the usb into

amazon. com usb flash drive

That isn't going to work because I use a subscription music service that uses a wrapper of sorts, like DRM.

"regular headphone jack" its not anything like that on the deck ;) you want to use the headphone jack on the ipod so you play and control everything on that and simply use the deck for a speaker amp and nothing else.

My civic has one of those STOCK so there :)

Okay, then that's what I want... does my link do that?

farkedup 05-16-2008 06:25 PM

All these are $150 or less
Dual XDMA690
JVC KD-PDR40
Sony CDX-GT420IP
Alpine CDE-9874
Clarion DXZ385USB
JVC KD-PDR50

took what like 5 minutes to find a bunch of options that fit under the budget? if you're using the ipod or zune for all your controls don't bother spending much on an amp. If you plan on getting a subwoofer then you can still even splice into the rear speakers for your sub output easily if the rear speakers are in the back window. (works well but spend extra on a good amp to dial frequencies in better)

farkedup 05-16-2008 06:27 PM

the clarion seems to be the only one with sub output in that pricerange... has a little thing to open and has a USB port AND the mini stereo jack input you want.

farkedup 05-16-2008 06:31 PM

jump up to $170 though and you'll find: Kenwood Excelon KDC-X492 that would honestly be my top choice if I were in the $200 or less market. Obviously some of those $100 or less ones will get the job done, pretty much just pick the layout you think you'd like most but when I refined my search to having the sub pre-out and the aux input under $200 the kenwood is the only one with a lot of "reviews" on crutchfield so that tells you it is very popular and everybody buying it loves it since it has top ratings...

Kenwood does make pretty good decks.

d-null 05-16-2008 06:36 PM

my last deck was a kenwood, and it did sound good and worked ok, but I honestly didn't like the control layout and software, it isn't very intuitive and required a fair bit of manual reading to get the most out of it, I think I would buy a different brand next time

....and I wasn't that impressed by the sound or 'equalizer' settings that much... adding a subwoofer made a huge difference with that deck
