Yes, you not only CAN buy diamonds online, you SHOULD buy diamonds online - you'll pay a ton less than at your local brick and mortar store for a (usually) higher-quality stone.
BUT...if you don't know a lot about diamonds (and I didn't) you have to learn about them first, which is what I did before buying my wife's engagement ring online. I got a gorgeous ring at a terrific price - and a good education as well.
The best place by far to learn and ask questions:
http://www.pricescope.com/
That's where you'll find all kinds of tutorials - and their main forum called "Rocky Talky" is the place to ask a million questions - and even get experts' opinions on the stone you pick out, or if you give basic specifications, experienced members' suggestions on stones that are available at various vendors to fit your needs and budget. A great place.
To my mind, the best place by far to buy is:
http://www.whiteflash.com
Trustworthy, knowledgeable, helpful and a wonderful collection of stones - their designer even custom-made the setting I wanted from scratch and it only cost a few bucks more than their stock settings. (I had a little less success with them on stock earrings - but for stones and rings, they're the place to go.)
I've also bought from Blue Nile and been satisfied, but they're a notch below Whiteflash in terms of service and quality selection.
