John M. Butler complained to Naperville police when he started getting billed for adult entertainment services offered over the Internet, services he insisted he had never used.

Police say Butler has been exposed as a liar.

The 28-year-old supermarket meat cutter now faces trial in DuPage County Circuit Court in Wheaton on misdemeanor charges of theft and filing a false police report.

Butler went to police Jan. 14 and filed a formal report, alleging he had been the victim of identity theft, police Cmdr. Dave Hoffman confirmed. Butler at the time was living at 314 Weatherford Lane in Naperville's Old Farm neighborhood, but has since moved to near-west suburban Countryside.

He claimed an unknown third party had obtained his debit card number or gained access to his bank account and made more than $500 worth of fraudulent charges at adults-only entertainment sites on the Internet, Hoffman said.

Police believe Butler "made the charges himself and was trying to get out of paying" for them, he said.

Butler was arrested May 2 at his new home in Countryside. He is scheduled to appear in court June 3.

MY question is, when some dude does something like this, obviously the banks charge back the paysites, and I never heard of them annulling a chargeback, so, basically, is this the story of some dumbass going to prison for having made the banks a cool 500 ?

Persius 05-11-2008 02:35 PM

wow lol.. i bet he feels like an idiot now

notoldschool 05-11-2008 02:37 PM

ya the beauty is if this happens enough and ccbill and netbilling get agressive in prosecuting fraudulent chargebacks....that shit would stop. had he charged back 2 or 3 sites I bet he never woulda got in trouble but 500 bucks worth...all they had to do was prove the IP addy was his...

not sure how you think the bank makes 500.00 if someone charges back 500.00 - that money gets credited back to the card holder

tiger 05-11-2008 07:15 PM

Thats exactly what needs to happen. People always think they can just lie and say they didn't charge it when it comes to adult.

Phil 05-11-2008 07:29 PM

I should do that too.

fallenmuffin 05-11-2008 11:26 PM

LOL, I don't see why people think they can just lie about charges.

I imagine NOT if the transaction is investigated for fraud.
