Which Linux OS do you have installed?

I want to play around with Linux on an old laptop. Any recommendations would be appreciated.:thumbsup

StuartD 05-11-2008 09:32 AM

I use Fedora almost exclusively... but if you want to just install to learn and play then I'd suggest Ubuntu.

Lycanthrope 05-11-2008 10:42 AM

Install (distro here) if you want to learn (same distro here), but, if you want to learn Linux, install Slackware.

u-Bob 05-11-2008 10:45 AM

slackware, zenwalk, vector linux,...

We have Fedora installed on out desktop and our lappys. Getting the wireless on this Dell to work was an experience in aggravation, but it works.

SuSE
If you want something more interesting try Solaris, but I doubt it will run on a laptop.

Catalyst 05-11-2008 07:02 PM

ubuntu at home.. centos on web sites

farkedup 05-11-2008 07:21 PM

yup... for home and workstation type use ubuntu is easily the best option out there. Massive support community and out of the box easiest distro to use and just jump into running while otheres have a bit more of a learning curve. Installing and updating software has never been so easy!

My first venture into linux as a windows replacement was RedHat 6.2 so I've been back and forth with windows and linux for what like a decade?

Really? I must have been a magician getting it to install on my Latitude D600 with 100% hardware support :)

Linux is Linux, it all has a Linux Kernel. The only difference is how packages are maintained, versions, preinstalled packages and custom themes.

Then again, you knew that, because you learned Linux, with Slackware :)

fallenmuffin 05-11-2008 08:23 PM

Fedora 8

GetSCORECash 05-11-2008 08:46 PM
