Homer's Odyssey....
Okay, what's the deal here? I just read Homer's Odyssey for a class, and his writing style seems pretty fucking basic. How can this be considered such an amazing piece of work? Every time Odysseus is in trouble, he meets a girl, sleeps with her, collects the gold from her dad, then walks out the door! Furthermore, whenever the story seems to drag on, or whenever he needs some kind of redirection of the storyline, he just uses some God to change the course of it.

Did you see the Simpson's Sunday?
Did you read it in Greek? |

I realize SOME of the significance of it ... but the overall storyline is _very_ basic... I was more creative in 8th grade. |

You need to read it in ancient Greek to truly appreciate it. It is very poetic. Don't forget, all of Homer's stories were not written down but were passed down from generation to generation in songs. It was much later when someone decided to write them all down.

Homer's Odyssey.... isn't that when he wented that van?

I loved the Illiad & The Oddessy years ago, but I was falling asleep re-reading it recently. The Greeks of this time period were much much different from the Greeks who later inhabited Sparta, Corinth, Athens, etc etc. Pompous Gods and self centered aristocrats.

I just watched "Homer's Odyssey" from the Simpsons First Season DVD Box Set, good stuff.
