Did the US really just bomb Somalia?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7376760.stm

"This incident will cause a lot problems to US interests in the region and the governments who support the US, by that I mean its allies who are puppets," he said, referring to Ethiopia which backs Somalia's interim government.

"I am letting the citizens of the US and the allies know they are not going to be safe in this area."

pornguy 05-01-2008 05:44 AM

Can you imagine the US doing something like that.

notoldschool 05-01-2008 05:47 AM

Nothing new ... They bombed Somalia a year or so ago on a few occasions, killing civilians as well . ( collateral damage sounds better ). Now they are conducting a war by proxy using the Ethiopians troops ....

Freedom must be spread ... at all cost ...

Mike Honcho 05-01-2008 07:24 AM

I don't know why we haven't invaded Africa for their diamonds.

vod 05-01-2008 07:27 AM

Yet the same people who will cry about us doing this.. Will turn around and cry if we don't do anything. The very people who bitch about us doing nothing in Darfur or the rest of the shit hole countries in Africa will turn around and complain about this.

I don't support the war in Iraq because I knew from the start it was BS, but I have nothing to complain about if we target rogue militant groups like this.

They called them al qaeda. Every person we kill since 2001 has been al qaeda. It's equal bullshit.

Fair, but a large part of the criticism comes from the methods the US military is famous for - namely dirty bombs and carpet bombing, regardless of civilian casualties. The impression is, rightly or wrongly, that the U.S. leaders attitude is "we don't mind killing and maiming a few kids and old ladies if we think we might get a terrorist or two".

That attitude doesn't go over well with the locals, obviously!

And it seems it much easier to do this in countries like Somalia or Iraq where, generally speaking, there isn't a heck of a lot of sympathy for their people back in the U.S. ... but would the military use these tactics inside the U.S.? ... I rest my case.

I'm not a fan of civilians getting killed.. but do you remember ww2? Hundred of thousands of civilians were killed by carpet bombing. In Africa millions have been killed by these warlords and rogue govt's with their ethnic cleansing.

This is the kind of attacks "The Real War on Terror" should be made up on. The invasion of Afghanistan was the right thing to do.. That should have been the number one priority because that is where bin Laden was based and most of his orgination was trained.

I fully supported the war in Afghanistan because it was part of the "true" war on terror. The deal in Iraq was total BS and the real war on terror has suffered along with the war in Afghanistan.

We should have put full effort into cleaning out Afghanistan and then went on to do pin point targeting in Africa and parts of Asia. This type of air strike attack in Africa should be exactly what the war on terror should consist of. Targets of opportunity.

I guess Al Qaeda can run, but they cannot hide.

:)

ADL Colin 05-01-2008 11:15 AM

The US bombed Somalia just a few months ago too. I'm willing to bet most will have forgotten about this incidence in just a few months again. It is rather routine and really kinda bizarre a bigger deal isn't made out of it. Similar to when Clinton bombed Sudan. A few news stories for a few days and then away it goes. Muslims? Africans? nuttin' to see here.

Elli 05-01-2008 11:28 AM

So why doesn't the DoD come begging to Congress for more money for the war in Somalia? Are their coffers overflowing for that budget?
