Google - the new big brother?

Ever wondered what power gives you having enough information about enough people?

Of course this is an extreme case, but think about the non extreme variations..

Google make use of a long term tracking cookie which means they can still figure out that those searches originated from your computer. :2 cents: Even if you regularly delete the cookie they can probably use other data such as your IP, useragent and search patterns to try to link everything into a contiguous stream of data related to a single person/computer. Google IS evil.

Think of it like this..

Why would the US govt need to be big brother when these companies like AT&T, Google and all the other roll over and play dead when ever the govt asks for info. The govt can just put pressure on these companies to get the data it needs. It's already done it with the who wire tap carp and internet ease dropping.

brandonstills 04-30-2008 12:45 PM

It was the Brazil unit that handed out the info. The US division refused. And this was for a child pornography group which they are bound by law and community standards to uphold. Google certainly has the potential to be evil, and maybe one day they will become like Microsoft but their "Don't be evil" philosophy which they openly preach also makes them accountable to it. Privacy zealots I'm sure have lots of issues with google but I haven't seen anything that makes me believe they are evil. As it stands right now I think google is a model company and many companies would be wise to adopt their philosophies.

Violetta 04-30-2008 01:50 PM

yeah... google will own the world in the future

2012 04-30-2008 01:57 PM

they come as friends ... get in your house.
soon they are rummaging through your refrigerator.
then you find out they are "just friends" with your girl.
before you know it they have acquired your identity and you no longer exist...
you are then shaved, sterilized and put to sleep.

the end.

The Judge 04-30-2008 02:30 PM

Google was founded by members of a certain dominating ethnic minority

Michaelious 04-30-2008 02:36 PM

I think for now it is all a neccessary evil

I had an idea to write a little google proxy that does a couple of things...

1) kills/resets the cookie every search, blocks other details such as referer and user-agent
2) initiates frequent, completely random searches so that my own "manual" searches are mixed in with junk

Gotta get to work on it :)

As of a few hours ago my firewall started giving tons of 'access blocked from your computer' to a 64.*.*.* address belonging to the G empire. I have no G toolbar or anything else and my browser was closed, WTF is going on?

CarlosTheGaucho 05-01-2008 09:47 AM

I actually believe that to take control over preferences of, mainly yet to become truly economically active people was the main motivation behind acquiring Youtube.

CarlosTheGaucho 05-03-2008 12:18 PM

Let's see, nowadays you:

- watch and share clips on youtube.com
- use gmail as probably the most advanced freehost email
- use google for online search
- use google for online geographic search
- other online google applications (those office tools and I don't know what all)
- google analytics as probably the most widespread and advanced free stats tool
- bid and advertise your sites

What did I miss?

Fap 05-03-2008 12:41 PM
