More fat people in world than there are starving, study finds

wtf....i have to think the food is not the same as it used to be.....

More fat people in world than there are starving, study finds

FAT people now outnumber the world's starving, a nutrition study has found.

While 800 million still go to bed hungry every night, another 1.3 billion have a body mass index that makes them either overweight or obese, says Barry Popkin, of the Department of Nutrition and Economics at the University of North Carolina.

Professor Popkin has followed the lives of 16,000 people in China since 1989, watching how social and economic changes have affected their diet and health.

"In China in 1989 there were no overweight people," he told the Herald yesterday, before addressing 900 economists on the Gold Coast. "Now, about 25 per cent are overweight or obese."

Fuck BMI, it is wacked.

tony286 04-27-2008 09:04 PM

The fat shall rule the world. lol

pornask 04-27-2008 09:06 PM

Looks like it's a couple years old study

Jim_Gunn 04-27-2008 09:09 PM

"In China in 1989 there were no overweight people,"

Come on, that can't possibly be true. There must have been some overweight people, maybe even many thousands of them in such a populous country as China, even back then.

Actually I have read a lot of countries that didnt have fat problems or heart disease then they introduce the american crap diet .The rates go thru the roof.

D Ghost 04-28-2008 12:30 AM

Not surprising

China covers parts of Eurasia, now there are damn well some people on the west side of china (assuming Pacific side is east) that are still nomadic and have for as damn near as long as mans time on the planet put on excess weight each and every year. Using BMI they would be considered obese. Hell most early men in areas that do get cold share this body type style, they were chunky with bellies and not thin nor of athletic build on the average.

Fuck even ignoring that and ignoring the study is so old. Vast majority of Chinese can not afford to consume any American crap diet. Which brings up another thing. That is a big ass stereotype that does not really hold true by calling it the American crap diet. Best case would be the corporate diet or the convenience diet.

There's a big difference between the words "no" which means zero and little or a few which means a relatively small number. Many people nowadays speak in absolutes when they really shouldn't be. I guaran-fucking-tee you that China with a billion people living there had *some* grossly obese people even back in 1989. But yes, the percentage shot up dramatically since then, and that is what the article should say. It's a very imprecise means of speaking to use absolutes when they are not warranted.

I've often wondered what's the ratio between fat and skinny among well-paid unionized workers in North America.

Seems like the majority of union workers I tend to see around these parts haven't missed a BBQ in their lives.

mike-al 04-28-2008 03:18 PM

why do people always claim american diet?

Americans have choice to eat what they want, and the problem is the fact that
grocery outlets make more money on a sack of potato chips and all that fucking
name branding junk food in the freezer department then they do a fucking steak.
So the fucking shit places keep all that crap in the front and we buy it for $1.99
here and buy one get one there, and we look at the meat section which is run by morons
cuz they only make $5/hour and have 3-5 day old meat at prices that are ridiculous
$9.99/lb

And guess what all that shit is 500 calories per ounce.

We choose this cheap shit, cuz its fast to make, it tastes good, but most of all ITS CHEAPER

Its not the American diet its the monopoly of grocery markets, everyone controls their money, and grocery markets are no different than shaving affiliates

What the fuck, I went to the store earlier. and I had the choice between
Nascar Burgers or the comical Whirly Chews...... each 3lb box was $6.99....
The regular ground beef was $4.99 lb and look like it was part buffalo not too mention soaked in water so it wieghs more..

Nascar Burgers? Is this is what the fucking food industry is becoming?
Guess what the grocery store probably only paid $3 for that box of fucking nascar crap
for a 50% profit instead of 29 cents per pound and having to manage a bunch of
idiots.

After Shock Media 04-28-2008 03:27 PM

Honestly Mike if your store sucks that bad in its meat or veggie department then I would change stores. However the fact that it is much cheaper to eat like shit is fairly spot and and to many can not afford to eat healthy.

LB-69 04-28-2008 03:36 PM

I gonna be fat if I keep working in that industry..:winkwink:

They are all owned by the same people, sure i can drive 90 miles to the YUPPIE store.
It is not going to be a weekly or daily trip. They got the angles covered like everyone else.

Damn really?
We are in a fairly small to mid sized area and have a good choice plus several small locally owned places like butchers, fish mongers, farmers markets etc.

Fap 04-28-2008 03:54 PM

haha woo fat people

tabasco 04-28-2008 03:58 PM

The starving people should eat the fat people. Two birds. One stone. Sorted!

GigoloMason 04-28-2008 04:02 PM

So wait... Now it's a bad thing that as a ratio less people are starving?

Methinks I'd rather have people with too much access to food than not enough. Call me crazy.

CherryLipsRosa 04-28-2008 04:37 PM

Any oversize combo meal in Asia or Europe is like a small combo in the US .. This says a lot!

CyberHustler 04-28-2008 04:38 PM

I like fat whores...

Libertine 04-28-2008 04:56 PM

BMI is such a shitty measure of being "overweight".

If my body had 0% fat, I'd still have a BMI of 27. Also, I'd probably be dead.

ArkansasDave 04-28-2008 04:56 PM

Ha! Great freakin thread Mike! :thumbsup
