California residents: Did you know?

Effective July 1, 2008, no talking on a cell phone while driving unless it is a hands free device.

Fap 04-27-2008 06:00 PM

New York has had this for years.. it's a good law

munki 04-27-2008 06:02 PM

About fucking time, legislation has been in the works since 2001-2002.

baddog 04-27-2008 06:15 PM

Guess I am going to have to get that hands free feature added to my car. I have 2 cell phones so a bluetooth isn't the answer.

rhon23 04-27-2008 06:18 PM

That blows. I hate hands free and I am one of those drivers that talks while driving all the time. Hate me if you will but have you ever driven in LA traffic on a daily basis.

PornMogul 04-27-2008 06:23 PM

I thought this was already in force. I really don't care about this particular law and will break it anytime I feel I need to make or take a call and im relatively sure a Pig will not see me on the phone.

While I talk on the cell while driving quite often, most of my near-misses have been due to careless drivers on their cell.

I remember a couple looking at me like, "hey, I am on the phone" as if it was an excuse.

BusterBunny 04-27-2008 06:28 PM

you can still text tho which seems even more dangerous :disgust

JDog 04-27-2008 06:30 PM

Actually this is making it effective, but the cops could have always pulled somebody over for talking on their phone if they wanted.

Even some people are going to have issues with the hands-free, the people with one tracked minds are still going to be fucked. I just wish they would make this a law up here in Oregon. As of right now in Oregon it's only illegal for a minor to "talk" or "text" on a cellphone while driving. Now call me stupid or what not, but shouldn't it be illegal for ANYBODY to text while driving??

mozadek 04-27-2008 06:32 PM

Oh, I thought the new law was already in effect.

It's illegal to talk on your phone while driving unless it hands free, everywhere in Australia! It's been this way for many years. It's also illegal to SMS while driving! And recently some states have made it illegal to smoke while driving if a child is in the car! :thumbsup

I think it got postponed or that was just when the warning phase went into effect.

VikingMan 04-27-2008 08:06 PM

This is going to be a huge revenue stream for the state if they enforce it.:2 cents:

tony286 04-27-2008 08:07 PM

I wish they would do that in georgia.

assuming few obey it and judging by what I see in my town alone at one street corner. They could pop about every 3rd car if nothing changes. Now can they use like red light cameras to screw you?

Honeyslut 04-27-2008 08:53 PM

In my county, if you do not have your load to the dump covered, they will now charge you anywhere from 100 to 500 fine

Same here, 250.00 a pop with an additional fine if you spilled any.

Vendzilla 04-27-2008 09:08 PM

I'll just not answer the phone while driving, I hate those ear pieces

brandonstills 04-27-2008 09:35 PM

If you have an iphone don't use both earpieces at the same time. I got pulled over last week for that. I could hear just fine (even the sound of the cars passing) but it's still illegal to have both ears covered.

..but having your stereo blasting so loud you can't hear anything isn't ironically. So fucking lame.

Yeah but this state charges insanley high taxes/fees on tickets right? So if you get a ticket for $100 the real cost is much much more.

Well, the penalty assessments will about triple a fine, but that part is really just paying for the process. Hardly a "for profit" venture.

Oh, and the tickets are $20 for first offense and $50 for others.

Its about time 15 years late but still better late than never.

MediaGuy 04-27-2008 10:08 PM

Yeah this stuff starts for us on May 1st or something...

Anyhow most people will ignore it, like most useless laws are ignored in Quebec.

Penny24Seven 04-27-2008 10:16 PM

I wish they would pass it in Florida, it is bad enough having people 92 years old driving, well have you seen a 92 year old dude on the cell phone LOL, fucking crazy shit man

Not sure I would call it useless.

Fap 04-27-2008 10:25 PM

Bluetooth works great

Elli 04-27-2008 10:31 PM

The cops already have laws about driving while distracted. Why don't they just use that? Why something cellphone specific?

Persius 04-27-2008 10:34 PM

damn i guess i gotta get the bluetooth in the car

D Ghost 04-28-2008 12:38 AM
