Has anyone bought a car from carmax?

if so what is your experience?

VikingMan 04-27-2008 11:15 AM

Carmax is for suckers. There is no negotiation so everybody ends up paying too much. :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

If you are wanting to buy a used car just find someone with a dealers licence and have them buy a car at an auction for you. I drive new cars now but for years I always went to auctions (real wholesale auctions not those bogus public auctions) and and would get cars like 40% off even after paying the dealer a fee.

You seriously can buy cars there for 40% off? or did you exaggerate the numbers slightly? Are they all basically 40% off, or does it take 10 trips to the auction to get a deal like that?

These are wholesale auctions. Think about any product out there and compare the wholesale vs retail costs and you will often find that wholesale costs are half or less .

The key is going to a real dealers auction vs a public auction. Wear your gold chains so you fit in.:winkwink:

i bought some poo through poomax...

To buy at auction, you have to know cars or it could be a very painful lesson. My cousin bought from carmax and was very happy with his purchase.

baddog 04-27-2008 12:16 PM

My daughter bought a new car from them, she was quite happy with the experience.

An old g/f of mine bought a used car from them and had an equally pleasant experience.

They are less of ripoffs than many car dealers.

As far as auctions are concerned, unless you plan on paying cash, don't bother.

farkedup 04-27-2008 12:17 PM

if you weren't able to get 40% or more markups do you think you'd have these small used car lots everywhere?

Like whats been said carmax is a ripoff...

Go around your town to several smaller places and describe to them exactly what you're looking for and give them your cell phone number and tell them to call you either when they go to an auction and something like that pops up or comes in on trade or something...

right now I have told a few small fries around here $15k or less, seats 5+ and isn't a mini-van or high mileage (prefer under 30k miles) bonus points for over 20MPG LOL get a good enough deal and you don't mind driving a gas guzzler since the amount saved on a nice vehicle will just be mentally put towards getting raped at the pump. For me something like a highlander with extra row of seats or pacifica fits what I'm looking for perfectly. Even though they're ugly I have kid #3 on the way so the civic hybrid can't work for a family vehicle anymore.

Those bloated Carmax prices keep Wayne's yatch fueled up:pimp

are they really ? alot of times u can find vehicles 5000 below kbb

i thought their business model revolves around a minimal fuck, on volume to make money instead of normal dealerships who fuck you majorly and sell fewer

if you really do your research on a car there are certainly some bargains to be had but the majority of the inventory is really overpriced but quality tends to be better than your corner lot ;)

k0nr4d 04-27-2008 03:27 PM

do not go to a dealer auction
do you know where those cars come from?

They are the trade-ins that the dealers don't think they can sell because something is wrong with them and they are not worth fixing.

campimp 04-27-2008 03:38 PM

i had a good experience getting a jeep there...

but i think you may be wise to compare whatever you are buying with prices on this site

http://www.autotrader.com/

they seem to be lower now

I got my car there. I love it, didnt pay too much, and the whole experience was really easy.

Personally, I hate haggling. If you enjoy it, don't go to Carmax.

PornMogul 04-27-2008 06:17 PM

I just bought a car at carmax. I still have the carmax plate on there and 4-5 people have asked me if I bought my car at carmax for some reason LOL. Anyway, I got a great deal and paid less than any other dealing in the country because you can have a car shipped in from anywhere. So even though I live in a tropical climate where sports cars cost more. I got one shipped in from bumble fuck Virgina and got one of the best deals in the country. It was a great no hassle experience and it was great because I bought a rare car and couldnt find one locally for a decent price.

baddog 04-27-2008 06:25 PM

San Diego is hardly tropical. Dumbass.

DBS.US 04-27-2008 06:36 PM

Myself and a girlfriend where shill bidders at a wholesale auto auction. The auction house give us a list of cars with the lowest price they would let the car go for. We would bid the prices up and stop just under the set price. If somebody over bid us they got the car and if nobody bid, it "looked" like we got the car and the house would try again the next week.:winkwink:

LMAO but dipshits in that area pay too much for EVERYTHING...

his "rare" car is probably a corvette :)

MRock 04-27-2008 10:57 PM

I love Carmax ... bought 3 vehicles from them ... all of them come with a guarantee, in good shape ... never had a problem with any of the ones I bought from them. I will pay more for that quality though, maybe you won't. I don't haggle, don't like to haggle ... I walk their lot, pick one and am out the door in an hour. They will also buy a car from you no hassle too. Don't even require you to buy from them to sell your car. I give Carmax: :thumbsup

NikKay 04-28-2008 06:26 AM

I've heard good things about Carmax from friends who bought there so I think it just depends what you're looking for. When I was in the market several months ago I started at Carmax but ended up buying from the Mazda dealer. Carmax wanted $15K for a 2007 Mazda3 with 7,000 miles and - no kidding - no power windows. Why do they even make cars without power windows anymore? I went to Mazda and paid $16K for a 2008 Mazda3 with way more options... plus I got a 3.9% interest rate. Can't get that at Carmax.

bronco67 04-28-2008 06:30 AM

I got into my Nissan Xterra lease about 5 years ago with carmax, and it was a great experience. Have since upgraded to a newer model.

Take a look on ebay, The prices or cars is so low right now, I saved about 11K on the last one I just bought, I would not sell a car on ebay right now though. I put one of my cars on there and I am lucky I put a reserve on it and did not have to sell.
