One More hosting thread...

Ok, I am a small but growing site currently using around 45 gig a month. I'm actually very happy with my hosting.

However, I want to shop around as I'm paying $150 a month and $4 a gig over 45. From what I can see there are a lot of lower prices out there.

I'm only intrested in Linux hostng.

I'd be fucking eternally grateful if people would post their experience (both good and bad) with various hosters to help me scan the marketplace.

I have been using rackshack.net for a few months now and have been pretty happy. Never had any downtime or anything. 400 GB for $99/mo. That's a hard price to beat. Their support is pretty bad but if you can admin your own server you really don't need thier support anyway. It's all cogent bandwidth but again, for the price I don't care.

www.phatservers.net
is the only way to fly
you could get 3 times the bandwidth for 1/2 the price..
so imagine if you go with their smaller plans..

Rackshack for over 8 months no probs.
Skynetweb are good too.
gighost is utter shit
webhostmedia is the worst I have ever come across. Even worse than gighost.

Holly shit! A dedicated server with 400 gig for $99? Are they serious? Unfortunately it says they are "sold out".

P.S. What is "cogent bandwidth?

cogent bandwidth.. it's fairly low quality bandwidth. High latency bandwidth. Good for TGP stuff.

If your looking for a rock solid network for paysite hosting, I think I can work something out in your budget range.

For more info on cogent, search for "cogent" on this board. Plenty of topics.

Let me know. My contact info is below. We are a non-cogent provider. We host for some of the largest adult sites on the net.

That seems pretty cheap but I have no idea the rep for them. Still trying to decide if I should try it..

Check out CandidHosting . They're the ones who do Voyeur Dorm and many other major sites. I think they even own their own building in Tampa. Anyway, I've been with them since my first host went out of business 2 1/2 years ago. They have great plans, and great service. David D., their sys-admin, is fantastic at keeping servers running smoothly - linux, FreeBSD, Windows, etc. I've been to their computer rooms quite a few times, and it is a first rate operation. You won't be sorry.

Tell Russ (who does the sales) that vik sent you. And no, this isn't spam, I don't get anything for this.

More confused then ever here. I checked out some net articles on cogent bandwidth and saw things ranging from "they are going to go out of business" to "its actually pretty good". Is there a concensus that for a high quality paysite where customers expect the best cogent is not the way to go?

It's like the difference between a corvette & a camaro. Both serve their purpose, but one is more expensive & quite a bit faster.

Do a search on here for them. You will hear about a lot of problems and some praise. Always do a little reseach and with bandwidth, you get what you pay for. They are cogent bandwidth.

Bottom line is if you are satisfied w/ your host, there is no reason to move. Higher pricing on bandwidth usually means they can better support you.

Honestly, are you really gonna sweat an extra 20 bux cuz your host is more expensive? Service costs MORE than bandwidth these days... thats what your paying for.

BTW, since I am a host, if you want virtual hosting and want to move, we offer .75 /gig Global Crossing

Contact me on icq and I can get you setup =)

strainer. ICQ me. I will try and give you a high-level view of bandwidth, providers, etc. Even if you don't host with us. Further more, we don't touch virtual hosting.. so I can be pretty objective.
