California residents

When was the last time you took Hwy 1 from SF to LA? I don't mean 101, but along the coastline thru places like Big Sur?

D 04-19-2008 04:02 PM

My bud was rounding the turns at, roughly, 20mph over the speed limit and it was causing my rectum to retract in my abdomen a bit... I was the one on the cliff-sides, after all.

I remember offering, "you know... I'm sure they have those speed limits posted for a good reason."

:helpme

Since then, it's been about timing over leisure every trip, so I've opted for the 5.

sicone 04-19-2008 04:08 PM

Never done the full trip, but have cruised 1 from SF to santa cruz several times

last year. Was going to SF to see friends... The whole reason we did drive was to go through Big Sur and that stretch there. :thumbsup

about 3 years for me..

Rique 04-19-2008 06:21 PM

Never. That's a route for morons (people who want a 'scenic' route in between). The 5 is best.

RevSand 04-19-2008 07:07 PM

Did it last about 5 yrs ago... Its a good drive if you dont really have any place to be and just want to enjoy it.

Sly 04-19-2008 07:09 PM

I did about four years ago... maybe five.

I've been to San Francisco twice... once was just a month ago. Both times have been bad experiences. What am I missing? What am I doing wrong? Wait, I know what I'm doing wrong... missing an exit and ending up in Oakland!

Vendzilla 04-19-2008 08:21 PM

Geez, maybe 20 years ago, el camino real isn't that whats it called?

subc 04-19-2008 08:49 PM

never even been to LA, lol. something is wrong

TheAmericanCannibal 04-19-2008 08:54 PM

6 yrs ago I drove the 1 to Carmel/ Pebble Beach
I had a religious experience in the morning driving back from Carmel-

I pulled over by Big Sur at 8 am and all I heard was the sound of barking sea lions off in the distance down the cliffs.

It was an amazingly beautiful day and perfectly quiet

nico-t 04-19-2008 08:55 PM

shut up, baddog.

DirtyProfits 04-19-2008 09:07 PM

Last year in June. Took us 25 hours from SF to LA and we missed the last motel at night so we had to sleep in the car. Longest trip I ever made. We arrived in LA, ate a Pizza and then my friend got sick and we had to drive back asap to SF. So I was driving 35+ hours from Friday to Sunday morning.

Were you pushing your car or something? There is definitely something missing from this story.

The PCH rules.

Last summer my Uncle and I did it from San Francisco all the way to Costa Rica for his 64th birthday. Had a blast, surfed and snorkeled nearly every spot between SF and Tamarindo. Easily the best trip I've ever been on.

MikeSmoke 04-19-2008 10:39 PM

I think it was about 20 years ago :1orglaugh

That sounds like a lot of fun... I bet you had some great food as well.

smoke 04-19-2008 10:58 PM

Had some great food and just a flat out great time. We put my Uncles camper on my Tundra and hit the road. I'd say its a must do for anyone that likes the outdoors and a little adventure.

Nonetheless, I have done the SF to LA driving route so many times that I prefer to fly.

Good fun having dinner with you and GoodGirl last week...

The pleasure was ours.

I usually take 5 because I love driving and it gives me time to think. I opted for the coast route on the way home to show it off to goodgirl.

Judging by the number of pics she took I would say: Mission Accomplished.

I took the 1 from San Luis to Monterey about 4 months ago. Great drive, but kinda sketchy when it's raining.
