XTV dead....who DIDN'T predict this one?

http://www.xbiz.com/news/92645

Adult company, which marketed Internet protocol TV, said subscriber base grew slower than anticipated.

Three years after its grand rollout, the company that marketed hundreds of adult channels over an Internet protocol television network has called it quits, XBIZ has learned.

?The [company] has ceased accepting any new subscribers, has turned off its Internet distribution facilities and no longer provides any video content to any former subscribers,? it said in a regulatory filing.

XTV, which operated in conjunction with mainstream content network ITVN, is closing shop without any remaining assets, according to the filing. The company, however, has approximately $10 million of unpaid liabilities, including more than $8.35 million of secured debt.

Jesus, it's amazing how much money people will dump into the dumbest things.. $10. million in debit..

CarlosTheGaucho 04-16-2008 02:46 PM

I guess investors were all mainstream?

uno 04-16-2008 02:51 PM

What's the history on them? It sounds really familiar.

tony286 04-16-2008 02:52 PM

Im going to keep my mouth shut. lol I read it and ibill comes right back up on me.

clicker 04-16-2008 05:08 PM

I thought it was a good idea and picked up some domains. It was hard to predict
but perfect example of how the tubes affect certain businesses. Having to have an actual "Porn box" in the house probably didnt fly to well.

a set top box for porn was hard to predict failure?

the first day they launched I said how stupid the idea was and how it would be die a horrible death

i know tons of people that LOVE porn, the only people I can see buying a set top box for porn are the meth heads...because man do they LOVE some porn, haha

This is their monumental article in Forbes from 2005 - I read about it in the past..

I really don't understand why anyone would buy a set top box to watch porn. They already have a TV, pay-per-view. They more than likely have a DVD player or video game system, rent or buy any title they want. They more than likely have a computer, every kind of porn that could possibly want.

Or if you have an internet why would you need a set top box for an internet TV?

That's also why I am sceptical about IPTV outside of hotels..

I've always thought that a sweet talker with a little knowledge and a lot of rich friends could really cash in on "investment opportunities" by assigning himself a large salary. Though, I suppose they could only pull off the trick a few times.

Rochard 04-16-2008 06:12 PM

Playboy had ICS looking into this to the point where we were testing out set top boxes at the office. I didn't see the point in this. Who the fuck wants to pay $x per month to have yet another cable box hooked up their tv - if they can hook up another box - when you already stream hidef video from your computer to your TV?

Zebra 04-16-2008 06:16 PM

Funny that they bought the xtv.com domain from Dokk. I bet Dokk never expected it to go thru $10million.

I think anyone with a brain saw this coming. It was one of the dumbest ideas in the history of porn. I figured this crashed and burned long ago. I'm surprised it lasted this long.

SmokeyTheBear 04-16-2008 09:09 PM

im pretty sure they were funded by the stolen ibill money so it doesnt suprise me.

seeric 04-16-2008 09:12 PM

fyre tv is doing the same thing right now.

spending millions.

Fap 04-16-2008 09:14 PM

thats a lot of debt...

hershie 04-16-2008 09:36 PM

Maybe I am a luddite compared to everyone else in this thread, but I don't stream high-def porn from my computer to my TV...

XTV offered 200 channels of porn movies 24/7 in lots of niches that you probably can't find easily for $30/mo. To me that was a great deal compared to any other option I could think of.

They were given high ratings too in a comparison that included Apple TV and a few others.

Porn customers tend to be private about their porn consumption and I figure at least 50% have wife or gf that doesn't know they watch it. Having a porn box on top of the tv isnt what most people want especially when there is so much one can get in a store or online and no one has to know.

Well the other 50% that watch alone or with the wife...represent a huge market and the box can be easily hidden from plain view. Last time I rented an adult video years ago it was like $10 compared to thousands every month with XTV for $30. The experience of watching porn with a remote to scroll around on a large screen TV vs. a computer monitor at your desk with downloaded stuff is also a huge matter.

I met with the owners of Fyre TV, they have very deep pockets and a long term business strategy.

They might well make this work.

Drake 04-16-2008 10:16 PM

A lot of cash down the drain

tony404 you are totally correct,I have worked offline for many years before online.

1.Many computers now including mine are multi media set ups,so hooking up tv,s etc requires on 1 cable....so I watch a lot of stuff on tv (using my computer) the model I have came with a remote thats works not only my computer but also my cable box...so internet porn on tv is a breeze.

2.I work with a number of adult satellite channels, these are very popular as most people have a box already capable of picking up the signal so NO new box needed ..just a discreet subscription.

3.Adult dvd rentals are real cheap.

So when you add it all up not many people are going to buy a new dedicated porn box.

Now after all that we are down to a low percentage and again you hit the nail on the head tony, its about privacy many guys keep the porn side of things discreet so a box would blow thier cover....that leaves just maybe some guys with no computer sitting in a room ....a desk top box formula like this will never work !

Game Over :thumbsup

What did you meet with them about?

bdld 04-16-2008 10:35 PM

yeah that was a stupid idea from the start. if you want to watch it on tv you get a dvd or order it with your remote from your cable subscriber.

Christina Muller 04-16-2008 10:36 PM

I must admit the concept looks fantastic, hence the amount of investors but sometimes even the best of ideas fail and you can see why when you look deep into them.

Also working with many large european adult corps I have witnessed some great ideas such as the prepaid card with a pin for example(sold in stores discreet next to prepaid telephone cards) .. everyone thought it was a fantastic idea..even I couldnt find a fault with that ...but it never seemed to really take off .

So even good ideas can fail too.

When it comes to adult xxx it cam become a science what will or will not work .

Dan it doesnt matter how big thier pockets are it just means they will lose more money!

Be honest do you really think this concept has a chance?
if so how? :winkwink:

I got a box to try out when it first came out and liked it.

I also promoted them and was a very happy affiliate.

Thats sounds like you didnt carry on with it when you say ...when it first came out?

It looked a fantastic product, but the market wasnt big enough ,and that was easy to see I think ?

CyberHustler 04-17-2008 12:15 AM

I had it for a few months but I only got it to see how well it worked and how best to promote it.

The customers must have like it because it recurred very well. The only bad thing was the recurring was only $3 a month.

brand0n 04-17-2008 05:09 AM

wait
funded with the ibill funds???

Why 04-17-2008 05:29 AM

well, it was a bad idea from the get go. no surprise here.
