How do porn movie studios get paid by PPV cable/satellite?
anybody know? do the PPV people pay a flat fee for the rights to a porn flick or do the porn movie studios get a % of the PPV sales the same way as the online VOD companies do it?
|
it depends on what you agree upon. Are you talking online VOD's? or more like the hotel chains etc?
In most cases you get a % |
in general it's a flat fee. I know that sucks, but most of these cable companies have you by the balls.
You can make it simple on yourself and simply decide not to give your content to them, or you can whore yourself out for the additional revenue and the branding of viewing your movie on a cable channel gives you. We do place certain movies on cable, and it really sucks when my buddies, who do FTA tell me, "hey I just saw that movie of yours" |
good thread

BUT cable companies also have PPV porn movies where you watch a video for 7.95 or whatever they charge these days. Producers just get a flat fee for that too or do they get a % of the sales? |

As for rev on PPV, if you are a big name studio then you can work out a deal but other then that nope. Every month this biz puts out 1500 - 2000 titles and only about 20 makes it PPV |
There are only a few brokers that have been doing business in the offline porn biz for years that handle these rights to license to cable tv and various entities like Hustler TV and they only pay flat fees. And they are very hard to get into, mostly they only deal with big companies and people that they have been friends with for twenty years unless you have a real popular studio.

I see Naughty America and Traffic Cash Gold stuff on my Rogers Box every month.
Studios should start to consider adding their stuff to our content plugin.. The one studio that is send us the most DVD's is cleaning up. |
Yeah, agree what was mentioned.
Reportedly, there are also revshare deals in place, but I personally know only about two producers that have this in place, and they sure are heavyweights with history. Cable licensing further differs into PPV, VOD, Hotel. The licensors (that's usually not you but someone who buys the rights or has the authority to mediate the deal) get seriously screwed by the cable providers too. For example we have a PPV deal in place in Italy, the money ain't that bad (nothing comparable to web though) and its good for the brand recognition, another cable deal in UK, where we licensed raw video and its soft version is aired to reportedly about 400.000 subscribers - anyway, if you would be thinking that this will work as a "teaser" and make people search for the brand on the web and sign up - NOT. As I see that - you can for sure reach a lot of people, internet is still a way better way to monetize them if done properly though... |
god bless the Internet - the only outlet where a producer can also be the gatekeeper/cash register to his own content.

i have had the same question on my mind for a while.
like playboy tv, they run all kinds of adult content from other production houses and charge good money for it, yet the distributors claim they get squat all for it.... i suppose it is a way to sell the content one more way...lets see: first we put it on our site as exclusive content. then we do our own dvd's then we sell to playboy/cable then we re-sell the content to the webmaster community as non exclusive content... |
I seen a Lightspeed movie on the Expressvu porn channels a little while ago.
NaughtyAmerica and Shanesworld seem to be on there non-stop. Thank god for FTA! |

Those are Digital Satellite receiver originally intended to receive the signals of FREE satellite. But once hacked and modified by flashing the receiver, you can get paying satellites unscambled. So a lot of people are having free porn on TV also .... |

Cable/hbo/cinemax buy flat fee rights for a 12-36 month period( and it's not alot, but the porn companies make up for it in sheer volume |
I've heard some studios cover their entire shooting budget by licensing that title for cable. Not sure if that is one deal covering that or the sum of all the cable deals though, so that is a pretty big variable.
