Great or very good songs that suffer from overplay

I am going to start by throwing Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody into the pot. If by some fluke of nature I have managed to go a long time without hearing it and it then comes on I will stop to appreciate the greatness of the song. However, it has had so much play through the years that I have pretty much overheard it and switch off most of the time.

Are there songs like that for you that you know are very good or great songs but they have just been played to death?

totally agree...I can't stand listening to it any longer even though I do like it

polish_aristocrat 04-16-2008 05:58 AM

REM losing my religion

Mutt 04-16-2008 06:13 AM

any song if you hear it too much will eventually get on your nerves.

for me it's practically every Beatles song ever recorded. sucks cuz i love so many of the songs but they are annoying now to me.

CDSmith 04-16-2008 06:23 AM

Stones -
Jumpin Jack Flash
Satisfaction

Led Zepp-
Stairway to heaven

And just about anything from Neil Young. (because he's from Winnipeg our local classic rock station feels the need to play 4 to 5 of his songs every day without mercy)

Love the tunes but have heard them 500,000 times each. Enough already, they've become cliches.

G.A.F 04-16-2008 06:32 AM

SCORPIONS Wind of change and REM Losing my religion.
Both excellent songs I ended up hating because of hearing them everywhere every time :(

Joe BrainCash 04-16-2008 06:34 AM

Song 2 by Blur
Smells like Teen spirit- Nirvana

And of course, the great classic : what is love? That song is dead because of the eveil movie : A night at The roxburry... Damn good song!! Don't hurt me, don't hurt me no more...lol

Horny Dude 04-16-2008 09:37 AM

Blame top 40 radio. They kill all kinds of songs. I can't even stand listening to the radio anymore.

Tom_PM 04-16-2008 09:46 AM

Anything by Boston. Hell coulda answered the same way in 1990, lol.

CaptainHowdy 04-16-2008 10:15 AM

Don't listen to the radio... but maybe most of The Police songs that you can hear on the radio are great but overplayed.

listening to radio 1 now and they must have a song rotation of about 20 songs, they overplay everything!! :(

Anything from Metallica's self titled album. The downfall of a great metal band imo.

CarlosTheGaucho 04-16-2008 10:28 AM

Definitely Stairway to Heaven

- beeing a massive Zeppelin Fan it kills me to hear this thing over and over knowing how much great stuff they released

It's like if you praised Pele for 20 years for one particular goal and ignore his entire career..

Nirvana was also super overplayed, haven't played them for like 10 years I suppose..

Elli 04-16-2008 10:36 AM

Hotel California. I thought I hated that song, but realized that it's a great song, I just heard it way too much when I was wee. Now I can appreciate it better.

I am a big REM fan and I really like Losing My Religion but I agree that for a while it was in too heavy rotation especially when prior to that the fans weren't really use to them getting massive MTV play and the like and suddenly they were all over the place. Luckily, I don't hear it that often these days so when I do it is still enjoyable and the three times I have heard it live it has been amazing.

Ha! I read this thread's title and immediately thought of Bohemian Rhapsody.

KzU 04-16-2008 02:18 PM

Well i would say... smoke on the water(taaataaataaa taataa tata) , by Deep Purple, anyways awesome hit..

CDSmith 04-16-2008 02:38 PM

Money - Pink Floyd.

I love Rush but I could stand to hear Closer to the Heart a little less.

GNR - Sweet child of mine

More will likely come to me. Plenty of overplayed shit out there. Nothing like turning great songs into total cliches. :(

SykkBoy 04-16-2008 03:50 PM

Scorpions "Winds of Change"

bns666 04-16-2008 03:56 PM

Also anything off of Sublime's self-titled album, "Hey Yeah" by Outkast (was just talking about that the other day actually), "Creep" by Radiohead, "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer and "Everlong" by Foo Fighters.

Yup, I agree with that one.

Mutt 04-17-2008 03:02 AM

any hip hop song that gets Top 40 play - not being a hip hop or rap listener if a hip hop song has a hook that makes it become a Top 40 hit I usually like it - for about a minute and a half - i.e. anything Aikon does

oh and that song She Got It by T-Pain

I am a Hall and Oates fan so that annoyed me on another level too.
