Jman 04-11-2008 12:21 PM

What's wrong with him making money of a hit song HE made?

Maybe a tad jealous aren't we???

Sarah_Jayne 04-11-2008 12:23 PM

I say good on him. I see no reason he shouldn't make money out of his own work.

AdPatron 04-11-2008 12:24 PM

Dude that was in like 1920... c'mon he deserves to earn from the new rick craze

Sarah_Jayne 04-11-2008 01:32 PM

He shut himself off from the industry for a few years and was pretty well known in the UK for shying away from any media attention.

tehHinjew 04-11-2008 01:50 PM

lol nice

fallenmuffin 04-11-2008 02:02 PM

That's pretty funny. LMAO @ the mets

WiredGuy 04-11-2008 02:19 PM

in the clip, it said the song was released in 1986. I thought copyright law only extended to about 20 years, so wouldn't that mean since 2006 it could be used with royalties?

tony286 04-11-2008 02:19 PM

I thought some companies like Disney, etc, raised a stink and took care of that.

I think they decided there will be no copyright expirations until 2018, which is when they were going to revisit the issue.

BlackCrayon 04-11-2008 03:17 PM

Everyone who knows Rick knows he started the whole "Rick-Roll" thing.

Enough people liked it back in the day to make it #1 in a variety of countries. I wouldn't buy it these days but it clearly did well enough. I think he has a good voice but he was part of the cheese machine which was Stock Aitken Waterman at the time. Same guys behind Bananarama and Kylie Minogue to name but a very few. You can tell one of their songs as soon as it starts no matter who is singing it. Total and utter cheese but they wrote and produced some of the highest selling songs over the decade and it is hard not to admire finding a formula and milking it for all the money possible.

GigoloMason 04-11-2008 04:19 PM

Yea god forbid someone makes money for their work.

Martin 04-11-2008 04:22 PM

Power of the internet is amazing. lol..

that was the 80s cheesewave though, you do nott see kids cruising down the street with rick astley cranking in their stereos, you do not hear rick astley on the radio or playing in the club, you do not see rick astley topping the charts. What we have now is millions of people sitting on the internet going "jesus fuck! i clicked another fucking rock roll!" i was commenting on how that old fart in the interview was going on about how rick astley is recapturing the hearts of people with a great song. no, he is not recapturing anyones heart. its simply a bunch of people thinking "damn this song sucks, it will be funny if i trick a bunch of people into watching the video, AGAIN"

? used to extend 50 years after the death of the artist or photographer in the UK. Then a few years back that was extended to 75 year. I believe most other countries followed that ruling

Miss Munki 04-11-2008 06:11 PM

That's awesome, he deserves it!

Pornwolf 04-11-2008 06:31 PM

Sorry to say, Rick is going to make fuck all from the streaming of the song on Youtube or anywhere else.

Youtube doesn't pay any real money for streaming music. Pennies, and no, they don't add up to anything. I've seen the royalty checks, they suck ass. Streaming doesn't pay.

If they ran ads on the rickroll vids they might make some money from the millions of views, but they don't.

Plus, Rick doesn't own the publishing so he'll receive none of the few pennies in publishing royalties from this.

But, on the positive side, Rick will do a lot more 80's shows for somewhere around $5k to $20k a pop. Definitely not millions, but it's a nice resurgence of his career since he wasn't doing that last Year. He will make a comortable 6 figure lump of cash for many years to come thanks to the RickRoll.

natas 04-11-2008 06:49 PM

well done rick:thumbsup good for you mate

rowan 04-11-2008 08:06 PM

I just saw a interview with his producer and manager of the record Pete Waterman.

Pete said Rick gave up the biz even though he was at his peak and had a great future as he didnt really like the music industry publicity etc.

He went on to say that the record sold over 15 million copies and with his other hits made Rick a wealthy man.

Later he added that at the moment the rick roll hasnt really made any $$$$ but at the rate its going if it goes to a crazy amount like 90 million views they will all make some $$$$.

Pete seemed to indicate that youtube pay a very small fraction of a cent for the views ???to his production company... that was new to me ? maybe some have forced tubes to pay something even though its only a micro payment ?
