Rehab opinions?

I went on a terrible jag last month, and have been hitting them regurarly for about a year. To kick last time, I locked myself in the house for a while, but I fell off tonight. Most of the people who post on these boards seem to be more intelligent than average, and have done some living too, so I ask you. If you have ever done voluntary rehab, was it worth it? Or should I just stay insinde till about 2004? Answers welcome, flaming also welcome, and amusing.

Check out NA or AA - depending on your situation.
There are a lot of people in there with years of clean experience that can give you some really good advice.

One of the best hopes you have if you're serious.

Do you seriously believe this?

Oh yes...you haven't been in a Yahoo chatroom for awhile, I'm guessing? I really miss the days of Compuserve and GeNie, getting on at 2400 baud and paying $3/hr. to hang in a chat room with 150 others who could keep up. You found very few drooling morons who scraped up enough food stamps to buy a 500mhz machine down at the Wal-mart back in '91. Porn webmaster boards are about as close to that as I've come in years.

Sounds like you have got some problems. I have been there and done all that. It makes me who I am, I am a better man from all of my trials and tribulation.

I once was addicted to cocaine. I went for a bag @ like 4 am, and was pistol whipped and knocked the fuck out. Stole my cash, change, etc. Later, I found out it was setup. Anyway, I was always pist about coke. The size of the bag, the quality, etc. That was the last straw. I thought I was going to die that night. And become just another statistic.

Now I am all clean. I just drink, smoke and smoke. I recommend you seek some help. You cannot break the chain until you are postive you want to quit. It is all about your state of mind. Use the coke story as a metaphor and see if you can relate.

Squishy.

A guy I know been clean for 30 years. He has said that he tried for years and could never get clean by himself. He went to AA one day -- and by being able to talk with people that had actually already done what he wanted to do (get clean) -- he got lots of great advice. The rest is history.

He also said "I don't even know what the 12 steps are. It's the group of people that are experienced in getting clean that gave me the guidance I needed."

jimmyf 10-11-2002 06:07 AM

I quit drinking 25+ years ago.. did it by myself... after long talks with myself....and many..many talks...I have never been to a AA meeting.. But I do know most people "CAN NOT" do it this way...

You got the first and most important step down... You know you have a fucking problem.... I have had friends ask me..would you talk to my brother, sister, kid... I ask them what the fuck am I going to tell them.... "Quit" well you tell'm to quit... From what you have said I suggest you get you ass down to an AA meeting TODAY. Or better still "GET ON THE PHONE" and call them...am pretty sure they will send someone to get... because you sound like if you leave the house you will get some drugs booze.. or what ever you perfer...

If you do go get some drugs or what ever... Try very hard to take a long look at that gutter on the street..... because that's exactly were you ass is going to end up.... and with nothing. I have NO ideal if you have family... if so you can bank it.... you will try and take every god dam one of them with you.

Krome 10-11-2002 06:12 AM

I transferred all money I had from current accounts which I had 24/7 access to via a card to deposit accounts...this just makes it alot easier if you are going cold turkey...ie at 4 o'clock in the morning if you dont have cash the local dealer is alot less sypatheitc to lines of credit....bottom line is you cant do it on your own...get help:helpme

BVF 10-11-2002 06:15 AM

I don't know if I should be saying this, but try smoking marijuana while you try to kick the alcohol. I couldn't imagine going cold turkey on anything. at least weed won't put you in a drunken stupor.

better yet, after you smoke some weed, eat something sugary like some Now-and-laters or cut up a grapefruit and put a lot of sugar on it.

coming home to a bong hit will make AA a lot easier in my opinion.

Ted 10-11-2002 06:20 AM

I met a guy earlier this year that gave up weed and drink 10 years ago, after he buried his best mate as the result of a car crash.

Dont let it happen to you

Nope I really don't think this good advice...:1orglaugh But I think it is funny. If the problem is booze and a bad one...they should get some cracker's and a bunch of sports drinks... forget the name... one the football players drink.. because you are going to get sick... as the person knows if they quit before....

Schwick 10-11-2002 06:26 AM

Although I graduated from college 10 years ago, the old gang still manages to keep everyone up on the latest (weedings, kids, vacations, etc). Two days ago I received the obituary of a guy that we all know who O.D.'ed on Oct 6th. Addiction is only deception. Do yourself a big favor and get the help to let it go and get on with things that really matter to you.

Squishy 10-11-2002 06:30 AM

The substance is meth...it's all bad. $100 a day bad. I had no issues quitting last time i had to, last month, just minor withdrawl, and went 27ish days...but then I had to play a gig and got weak...my best bet is to probaby quit DJing. It's my downfall.

Squishy, man. Go to NA right now if you can. Are you in the States? There are meetings everywhere all the time. Dunno about overseas.

I have seen some people very close to me beat themselves up pretty badly. People close to me have lied, stolen, etc. for their drug of choice. Doesn't make them or you a bad person - just a person with a bad problem.

You are surely right about DJing.

The standard wisdom is if you can make it to 90 days, your chances of staying sober are much higher. Rehab can help get you there and so can NA.

When you need work done on your car, go to a mechanic. When you need carpentry work done, go to a carpenter. When you want to get clean, go to NA and meet addicts that know how to get and stay clean.

Fletch XXX 10-11-2002 09:13 AM

No matter what you are trying to kick going to NA or AA definitely will help. I did it.

Very tough and hard to do, but there is a big difference between NA and AA.

What are you trying to kick?

Stan from the legendary punk band The Dickies does Heroin talks literally blocks from me and is a wonderful person regarding musicians and their habits, he can help any man kick junk. 12 step NA mettings.

Is ifs just alcohol, go down to AA sit through a meetings and donate 10 bucks and read the book, I bet it helps.

Just identifying the problem is the largest step.

I have battled addiction more than half my life, and continue to do so daily, its a never ending battle of self control vs anxiety, insomnia, insecurity, depression, and most of all self destructive self awareness.

Good luck.

MaxDent 10-11-2002 09:28 AM

Addiction is no fun. Fortunately I've only had the vices of cigs and beer. I'm alergic to most hard booze and that keeps me away from sitting down with a bottle. I would recommend seeing a doctor and discussing your options with him. There are also psychological implications. Research the substances you are on, find out if they are psychologically and physically addictive. If it is psychologically addictive then you will need counseling and some friends to work it out. If it is physically addictive then you may want to check into a dryout clinic. If both, well, you've got a challenge ahead of yourself. The good news is you've made the first set in realizing you've got a problem. Keep fighting and good luck.

Sly_RJ 10-11-2002 09:59 AM

I wish you luck my friend. :thumbsup

UnseenWorld 10-11-2002 10:04 AM

Experts regard a voluntary rehab as having a much higher prognosis for success than an involuntary one, because with an involuntary one there is more resistance on the part of the subject due to the involuntary loss of freedom.

ADL Colin 10-11-2002 10:05 AM

Yeah, man. Best of luck.

KDizzla, Jimmy, Krome, Fletch.

Heavy -- and congrats.

pink_in_the_middle 10-11-2002 10:17 AM

Good luck whatever you decide :)
I've never been in this situation. We'll all be here for ya' :)
I think that if you're serious about helping yourself then try rehab. If you really want to help yourself then you'll make it work. Anything in life is possible.

Mr.Fiction 10-11-2002 10:21 AM

Good luck Squishy - if you really want to be clean, you can be.

Iron Chef 10-11-2002 11:11 AM

Well you took the first step in identifying your problem.
:thumbsup

NA/AA can help as long as you keep and open mind and hook up with the right people. I met some great people that helped me out in ways I could never really imagine. Don't make any mistake, it's not the be all-end all. I used to go to meetings downtown NYC and wind up hooking up and getting high with crazy junkie whores - not a good idea...

Shit man, I tried two stints in rehab and it really didn't help. That's just me though, I wasn't ready to quit. Eventually, as my life got more and more fucked up, I just locked myself down with my Playstation, some good friends and a lot of herbs and kicked the junk cold turkey. Now 5 junk-free years later, I'm glad to say that life is much better, and I'm in the process of giving up the greens too - it's been 2 weeks and I'm doing well. Booze is tough, since it's readily available, socially acceptable and can be abused for a while with a minimum amount of damage (that is until you run your car into a tree, like a good buddy of mine). If you want to stop you can though, just stay away from the bars and keep yourself real busy.

Be strong and when it looks like shit is bad, remember that it'll get better. Substance abuse only makes a bad situation worse.

Best of luck to you
:)

I went to rehab when i was 18, it helped me kick my habits. I still smoke some weed & drink occasionally. But my rehab experience helps me to remember what could happen if i ever made either of those things a regular habit :thumbsup

You couldn't get meth if you weren't djing? When you get to the point where you are blaming people, places and things for your use, you're an addict, dude. There are worse things to be ... DEAD addict, JAILED addict, MENTAL HOSPITAL addict come to mind.

PornoDoggy 10-11-2002 11:46 AM

And just so you know ... I was a "SALVATION ARMY HOMELESS SHELTER FOR VETERANS" addict at one point. Been there, done that, had to have somebody GIVE me that t-shirt, friend.

american pervert 10-11-2002 11:54 AM
