Replacement razor blades are such a racket

Next to replacement printer cartridges replacement blades have to be the biggest rip offs. Every time I have to dish out for them I come away feeling robbed.

Is there anything else out that that is like that?

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 04-08-2008 04:07 AM

Bah, still using the same razor and blade that my Grandfather handed down to my Dad, who handed it down to me:

Stand tough and get close to the blade...

Have you tried Save A Blade. You get up to 200 shaves from a single blade.

Calico Jack 04-08-2008 04:39 AM

I use the Mach 3 too. I pay $24 for 8 replacement blades!!!

Sarah_Jayne 04-08-2008 05:02 AM

I would have been concerned if my father felt the need to give me a razor as a hand me down.

Replacement blades for a safety razor like that are nearly free.

You just touched on one of my BIGGEST pet peeves. Seriously, I get so pissy having to shell out for them.
And now here I am using the fusion 5 I believe it is. If the 4 prior blades missed the hair, surely the 5th will :helpme

I know..I am not extra tight with money but I don't like being shafted either and I just get that shafted feeling every time.

Bryan G 04-08-2008 08:43 AM

Funny you say that. I went to the store this morning and bought some. 5 pack, cost me $12.00 WTF

TheSenator 04-08-2008 08:47 AM

I've spent about $500 in laser hair removal in my armpits. Haven't had to shave in 4 months, It's like HEAVEN.

I used to get the worse ingrown hairs and razor burn so had to buy the expensive stuff. They don't get my money anymore though...:winkwink:

Paper_Amar 04-08-2008 09:08 AM

makes me so mad... i do wanna start using something else, thank god I only shave once a week or so

TondaB 04-08-2008 10:10 AM

There are tons of things overpriced. I know people, especiially in this industry, are not into coupon shopping. I find by coupon shopping I get the things that are most overpriced for pennies on the dollar. Razors, razor blades, shaving cream, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc. Right now I have about 10 razors and about 50 blades in my stockpile. All of which I paid pennies on the dollar for or perhaps I even got it for free!

Sarah_Jayne 04-08-2008 10:18 AM

Coupons are pretty much non existent over here. I wish they more commonly available I would be such a coupon clipper.

Rochard 04-08-2008 10:37 AM

I used a self cleaning electric razor. Had it for years. Once a year I put a new blade in; It costs $30. I love it.

Ding Ding Ding! Quote of the week :thumbsup

Mike Honcho 04-08-2008 10:47 AM

I agree 100%, thats why I bought a braun electric shaver and I love it, but at the end of the day they still get you on the self cleaning solution that you "must have".

The worst part is they engineer the razor blades to dull faster than they should, just like light bulbs are made to burn out after a certain time period, and car parts are made for certain mileage, but at the end of the day what can you do? Nothing. That's why, at the end of the day, I always feel like I've been shafted. :2 cents:

What do you expect from the industry that pioneered "throw-away" marketing? :) Even at the turn of the 20th century, King C. Gillette was all about handing the consumer a blade for next-to-nothing (perhaps even less than his actual cost) in order to get an eventual return on the marked up replacement cartridges.

Since then, other industries have followed suit... Some media boxes, gaming platforms, printers, etc.... all might actually sell at a loss on the idea that you'll be back for the "cartridges."

Even freebie email accounts and other internet services can be said to be following this form of marketing strategy, as they put the product up at no cost, and make their money on advertising down the road.

Back to the razors... perhaps unlike you, Sarah, I am a bit tight with money, but I've already considered the math, and think they're worth it.

I use a Gillette Fusion, myself.... and, yeah - the blades are expensive, but they last for 2 months+, and you can't really get a smoother shave... can whip right through it - no cuts or anything... and, with that quality of shave, I'm willing to pay 7 cents a session. :)

Hell... the time they save me, alone, is worth that, I think.

pornguy 04-08-2008 10:58 AM

I still use the 2 blade disposable from Bic. Does well enough for me

GrouchyAdmin 04-08-2008 10:58 AM

This just in: Supply and Demand not a myth!

tiger 04-08-2008 11:05 AM

Anyone know what it actually costs to make those cartridges? Their margins must be sick.

Axzar 04-08-2008 11:05 AM

Jello! Check the unit price! Per pound it is outrageous!

I lied a bit because I am fairly tight with my money but I don't mind paying for something if I feel it is worth the cost. However, it just feels like I have been mugged every time. I don't know how yours last so long. My partner goes through a blade every two weeks or so and he doesn't shave that much.

I am only doing female shaving stuff and even mine don't last a month. I may also be making this up but it always feels like the female blades are even more costly than the male. However, it could just be I hate spending that even more when it is for legs and pits.

mike-al 04-08-2008 11:35 AM

Mach3 is the biggest ripoff, why people buy that shit is beyond me....

I think the female blades do cost a bit more than the male blades...

As far as how they last me so long, I dunno... but they do last me 2 months, and I use them just about every day. If they lasted me only 2 weeks a cartridge, I woulda given them up a long time ago.

Maybe it's the fact that I use them every day... I've found that if there's only a bit to be shaved, it's a lot easier for the blade to get the job done than it I have a few days' growth...

gotta keep the baby face, ya know... for the ladies. :winkwink:

Jim_Gunn 04-08-2008 11:51 AM

I use the Mach 3 and they shave great but they sure are pricey, especially for a guy who shaves his face, head and torso every few days! After one use like that they have to be replaced. It's gets awfully expensive!

I remember when I got my sensor (I think it was called) in the mail. Isn't it nice that the gov. gives out your info to the highest bidder?

But I have one of the fusions also. One of the cartridges lasts me about a year. :1orglaugh

What a marketing technique though. Whoever came up with it was brilliant!

Hard to really argue with that.
