Outsourced telemarketing...ugh

If I call a customer service line and get ahold of someone who's first language isn't English, I understand it as a sign of the times...but what's really aggravating is companies that call ME and their telemarketers don't speak English as a first language...

when did outbound telemarketing companies start outsourcing? Is this something that's been going on for awhile and I haven't had to deal with due to screening numbers and being placed on the do not call list?

You can't even have the traditional fun you have with English speaking outbound telemarketers...because these guys don't get it or can;t even get string along...takes all the damn fun out of it...

That shit drives me crazy. Why on earth would you pay any amount of money for someone to call customers if they can't talk to the person they're calling at a fluent level? It's almost as bad as when a computer calls your house and then asks you to stay on the line for a person.

I can tell pretty much immediately if I'm about to receive an outsourced telemarketing call... my phone displays caller ID as "UNAVAILABLE" which usually means it's an out-of-country call.

Then there's the inevitable propagation delays caused by them using cheap satellite routes which makes an already difficult conversation (trying to understand a thick Indian accent) even more entertaining :)

Most of them claim to be calling from Telstra which is the largest Australian telco (and I believe the largest Australian company overall) but they're really calling on behalf of reseller telcos who want me to switch billing to their company. Pretending to be from another company has gotta be halfway illegal.

Just before I got into adult, I worked for two different companies which did fraud detection/prevention on those third party resellers for states which require it. We got bonuses for busting scam companies and sales people. Let's just say we got lots of bonuses. Those guys don't follow regulations and laws at all and will say anything to make a sale. A got a $300 bonus on a guy once because I caught him lying to an old man telling him he HAD to switch phone companies because the his original telco was going out of business. Another time, I busted a door-to-door salesman who pretended to be a technician from a home owners original telco. He would go into people's houses, call in an order for new service as if he were the customer/homeowner, and then collect a per-sale fee from his boss. Meanwhile, the customer didn't even know they'd been switched.

I get door to door salespeople trying to make me switch electricity suppliers too.

They all say that the only change is that the bill looks different. Right, so I keep calling the company I'm no longer a customer of for support and billing enquiries...?
