Google goes after Youtube.net, and more

Google (GOOG) and its YouTube division have filed for arbitration under UDRP to get control of the YouTube.net domain name.

now watch all the morons express disbelief that they registered something that takes advantage of a recognizable trademark/brand ... and then a company lashes out to protect it.

google has made a lot attempts to suppress people from saying "google it" etc... it shouldn't surprise anyone when they come knocking for XYZTube.com with a similar look, feel, layout etc all designed to cause intentional confusion wiht the real site.

L-Pink 04-04-2008 05:13 PM

I can't believe they did that! :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

digifan 04-04-2008 05:13 PM

Haha, good times ;)

IllTestYourGirls 04-04-2008 05:13 PM

I find it funny that an illegal tube site is worried about trademark laws.

woj 04-04-2008 05:38 PM

seems hardly shocking, if some wise guy registered microsoft.net, I'm sure microsoft would go after them too...

BlackCrayon 04-04-2008 05:42 PM

All depends if the domain was regged before Youtube existed. Utube.com falls under this and they made some nice cash from selling it.

utube.com was utube.com well before youtube.com came into being.

and it doesn't matter when a domain was registered... the only thing that matters is "can you afford the fight and is it worth it"

:2 cents::2 cents:

"YouTube.com was registered in February 2005.... YouTube.net was registered in August of that same year."

I'm no expert, but it doesn't look good for the .net owner...

Nope, it doesn't. Myspace.co.uk lost their domain despite owning it before myspace.com existed, because they were monitizing it through social networking keywords.

Sadly, you would be surprised at what people will register. And yes, MS chases them to the ends of the earth.

I am a little confused here ... does Google own the internet .. ?? because unless youtube.net falls under US copyright and trademark ( and it might very well ) but if it doesn't it would fall under the same freedom we are all suffering from with the free tube sites ..I am under the impression that if the country you reside in and register your urls under then you would only fall under the laws of said country ... if someone knows different please enlighten me .. ??

mynameisjim 04-04-2008 06:59 PM

They could easily win going after every video sharing site with "tube" in the name. They do have to walk a thin line here though. Microsoft is already thought of as evil so they can sue and it really doesn't harm their image. If Google starts suing like crazy it could very much hurt their brand.

When you have the best lawyers money can buy and probably a office in every country in the civilized world. Your reach is pretty far.

IllTestYourGirls 04-04-2008 07:01 PM
