They're paid what the market can bare. Name players get fans in the seats and watching on tv/etc, casual fans that wouldn't normally be interested. I had a Japanese girlfriend that hated baseball... UNTIL Ichiro started playing for the Mariners. She was so into it we made a trip to Seattle to see a live game.
