Playboy was a men's magazine before there was such a thing... Now, Maxim, FHM, and so forth have nearly as much nudity anyhow. Playboy have had time to get a reputation (rightfully so) for their non-photographic content. It makes sense to play that up. If you've got a reputation, you can use it to go more highbrow and upmarket.

He probably wants to compete with Maxim and the mainstream mags instead of Hustler and penthouse in the adult section:2 cents:

I like Playboy's photography except for the centerfolds. A lot is really good and there are tons of hot girls that want to be playmates.

They even have some good Asian chicks from time to time. :)

I really don't think what he say's matters very much... His little girl has been running that for years... Shit he was almost busted when she took over... So he might say a lot of shit... But getting it done is another...

I dunno. I wouldn't bet against it. The new editor comes straight from Maxim. This is what he wanted. If they do the right thing and listen to Lensman they can make the smut a web thing and only put softcore spreads in Playboy.

Come to think of it, if they put softcore spreads in playboy and offered the same girl - only hardcore - on the web I think that would be the ultimate upsell and it would be a win win situation. They would get good newstand placement and they would be the most profitable online site.

If this happens I need a 6 figure consultant fee Lens. I'll know where it came from.

YOu would think that he would keep Playboy the way it is and add a new magazine to compete with Maxim. etc...

Sometimes things make too much sense. It always seems like those things are the last to happen.

Keeping Playboy as it is and having a second magazine to compete with Maxim and its ilk would be alot more work and not as successful, at least in the short term.

They would have to hire a whole new staff and it would take more time to plan a new mag and then to promote it would be hard.

etc.. etc.. blah blah

Yeah, now it would be a lot of work since the market is saturated in my opinion. What I don't understand is why they didn't do that as soon as Details started to get a little racy!?!

This is the grandfather of mens magazines after all! How did they let this happen?!

I know playboy has stopped printing in Australia, to low of a readership to make it worth it, people turned to FHM, Ralph, Maxx etc. Maybe they're worried about the same thing happening?
