is there something for the deaf to let people know when their tub is overflowing?

My fuckin mom has just flooded her house for the 3rd time this year

Is there some sorta alarm for the deaf or old people that will make some crazy noise before they fuck their house right up again ?

$25k damage this time, last time was just as bad.

candyflip 04-02-2008 02:46 PM

I use my eyes.

iMind 04-02-2008 02:48 PM

yeah well .. get this
She started a tub for a bath, and then went into her room and worked on a painting for an hour or so ..

She's just getting old and needs an alarm or something I think.

stickyfingerz 04-02-2008 02:49 PM

Im sure there is. Just would need a moisture sensor, or even like a flap mounted to a switch with a float that dips into the tub. Sort of like a gastank float that gives you your reading on your gas gauge. Wouldnt be hard to rig something that you could hook into a strobe light etc to make it obvious the tub was close to overflow.

Wet feet?

Put a radio on the bathroom floor, when the main breaker trips all the lights will go out.

Come to think of it a sump pump has to have some sort of sensor to kick on the pump.

Sump pumps have a internal float that rises when water is present, tripping the motor.

Does she forget she started to run a bath?

I'm sure you could rig something, but, honestly, maybe a part-time/full-time caretaker of some sort is the best option at that point.

Good idea

Guess I could rig something where a float triggers a switch and sounds off an alarm

My poor dad :1orglaugh
He's been renovating for years and twice in the last year they've had to rip out the walls and ceilings :(

tical 04-02-2008 03:04 PM

why rig an alarm? just rig a floater that stops the water (like a typical toilet).. or a combo of both (in case she actually leaves the house)

PVC pipe, ping pong ball, popsicle stick, and a regular alarm activated by button.

You can McGyver this easy.

kmanrox 04-02-2008 03:08 PM

lol @ L-Pink

I dunno, She's hard of hearing and a little forgetful is all really, perhaps a little ADHD in there aswell like myself.

In this case she ran the bath and went down stairs to get some clothes she said, saw her pretty tulips and got sidetracked and decided to do a painting of them lol

I doubt she needs a caretaker, she's in good shape just has a momentary lapse of memory every few months and tends to fuck something up at the same time.

Last time she drained the 100 gallon fish tank they have onto the floor when the drain popped out of the sink and she couldn't hear the water flowing all over the place.

Main problem seems to be that she doesn't hear the water flowing , so I think an alarm will cut it.

Yes there are level alarms. However if you happen to have an old school style plug with chain then there is a simple fix. Specially since pumps usually have electricity which could be another issue all together.

Thanks, googling "level alarm" found me what I needed :D

If she's already caused 50k+ in repairs, it might be time, and cheaper, to get a nurse.

iMind 04-02-2008 03:18 PM

oh .. guess I could just tie a floater to the plug LOL ..
now that's an easy fix!

That was my idea instead of a level alarm.

it can be less complicated too. Actually SIT in the bath while waiting for it to fill up and enjoy your SPA day ;)

k0nr4d 04-03-2008 06:35 AM

Every single bathtub i have had has a drain at the top of it in case its overflowing. I have never in my life seen a tub without this.

Sounds like she may need a hearing aid also.:2 cents:

My grandmother did this twice last year with her sink. She would get a washcloth out to clean her face, put it in the sink, turn the water on, then go to the other room for something and get distracted. The washcloth would stop up the drain and then we'd be hiring a water removal place to come out the next day.

She did it about 2 months apart and the guy from the company said that you'd be surprised how many "repeat" customers he had. :1orglaugh

DirtyDreamer 04-03-2008 07:49 AM

Get rid of the bathtub and install a shower.

WebCashMaker 04-03-2008 07:52 AM

A float switch hooked up to a light.

Barefootsies 04-03-2008 07:56 AM

Wet feet?

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

I was thinking the same thing.
