I read somewhere that a dark screen uses more energy then a white screen on a lcd monitor... S

And it seems the earthhour.org servers can't handle the traffic. Maybe they just turned them off to save energy.

We've turned the lights out. Now it's your turn - Earth Hour Google users in the United Kingdom will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.co.uk homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour ? from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation. Given our company's commitment to environmental awareness and energy efficiency, we strongly support the Earth Hour campaign, and have darkened our homepage today to help spread awareness of what we hope will be a highly successful global event. |
No-one uses google, don't worry about it.
|
lol @ retarded comments .. some of you guys are real idiots.
Google didn't said they were saving shit by turning the lights off, they were just trying to spread the word and they successfully have. Quote:

Making a home page black? That's uh... body {background-color: black; } oh wow... whole lot of effort went into that... I'll be leaving the lights on thank you very much... when I see Google turning off their datacenters then I might entertain the idea a bit more... otherwise who fucking cares. Sorry to say it, but I know alot of lurkers are feeling the same way I do... :helpme |

|
Hummm... solar power, am I always on earth hours then?
|
wtf, they should have blacked out every page, even gmail, and leftthe text black, hahaha
|
All of the environment nuts have publicallly said that this will not help anything it is just a publicity stunt.
I say fuck em. This idiot on the news in Toronto said.. "Why 8pm at night? thats not a good time to turn your lights off" and the reporter asks "When do u think we should turn them off" The woman actually said "How about in the morning? I think that is a good time to conserve energy" AHHHH HAHAHAAHHA! |

^^ BTW, in addition to the above... all 4 servers run powerd, which reduces the CPU frequency (and therefore consumption) when they're idle. For example one is currently throttled from 1.8GHz down to 0.225GHz
|
If they want to impress someone they should turn off all their servers for an hour.
|
Cool gesture by them
|
Barak Obama night. saw that earlier today

I think most of you have missed the point which is not entirely surprising. Earth hour is NOT about not using any energy. It is not about shutting down your company. It is a a statement, it is done to raise awareness and to make some people think about the energy they use.
Like our family, we actually did the earth hour here with the lights. We turned them all off....and in doing so it did make me think..... The kitchen and breakfast room lights were on although no one was in those rooms...same with the laundry room and one of the bathrooms. Three kids were watching TV and gaming in each of their rooms, during earth hour they turned off the lights, and sat together and just talked. Did we save much energey? Absolutely not, but it did remind me how much my family wastes by leaving lights on unnecessarily, and I guess that is what Earth Day is all about. Earth Day will never mean anything to the individuals that say "unless google shuts down their data centers for an hour and loses money, fuck them, I ain't doing shit", but then to individuals like that, even if Google did, they would say "fuck it" anyways because it is "cool" they are a real "rebel" by not cooperating. To each his own. |
