bad news for .com prices
slashdot article:
VeriSign Jacks Up .com, .net Prices To the Max http://tech.slashdot.org/tech/08/03/28/2249213.shtml arstechnica article: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...-in-a-row.html |
It's due to their increased oil costs and the sub-prime mortgage on their office space.

The man is always digging in our pockets
:1orglaugh
how high can they go?
I'm pretty sure they are going to do this every year from now on so that in a couple years it will start getting expensive, and people won't just register domain names that aren't being used and just sitting there.
peanuts.
I remember the old days when domains actually cost something. |
7% increase... could be a lot worse. i doubt this increase will free up unused domains.
yea.. there are still domain company out there getting 20 dollars a pop
Wow they're going all the way up to $9. :1orglaugh
When I first started in this biz it cost $35 a year to register a domain....with a 2 year minimum. |
Quote:
The 2006 ICANN/VeriSign agreement highpoints are; 1) VeriSign will continue to manage the .COM registry until 2012 2) It allows VeriSign to increase domain prices 4 of those 6 years. (2006-2012) 3) The increase is capped at 7% per year. 4) They (VeriSign) are required to announce increases 6 months in advance. 5) Assuming (safely I'd say:)) they do the max the 1st 4 yrs a .COM will wholesale @ $7.86 That's what all Registrars will be paying so it's anybody's guess what the retail price will be. |
So we spend a extra couple bucks on domains. Big deal!
7%... lol
This is why stock traded companies should not be running shit like this.
The value of the dollar currency has decreased like 40-50% in 10 years, so as foreigner, its not the costs that worries me :uhoh
I dont think domains are expensive at all ,a happy meal at mcdonalds probably costs more than a domain.
they may not be expensive, but if you own alot, the extra charges sure will add up to alot.
Yeah, it's crazy. MelbourneIT.com.au charge $35 AUD per a .com,.net,.org

I remember paying $99 a year to register a domain :P
hell, that small increase is still cheap to me considering I paid $75/year when I registered my first domains.
about time...
I think $10-$15 /year is still acceptable.
By the way, it actually became cheaper for Eurozone residents. :winkwink: I read US dollar fell by almost 50% since 2000. |
How my God!
I should have bought them when they were cheap :( |

verisign are wankers and will charge as much as they can
There was no justification for the high price when it was between $35-$99 and there is no justification for a 7% increase per year for the term of their contract either.
At least that is my opinion |
the people that keep saying things like "peanuts" and "that's it i should have bought it when they were cheap" probably only own a couple domains. for people that own a couple thousand domains this adds up to a big yearly expense. there is no reason why Verisign needs to raise the price except because they want more profit. all that stuff they say in the article is all BS. why should we pick up the tab if they want to improve their network. when their contact ends who says they will be the ones selected again by ICANN.
you could tell the ones that don't own a lot of domains by their responses. |
*remembers when the only registrar was net sol*
I have always bought them at directnic anyway...
Damn, I miss the '96-'97 era when domains were free lol

UNFORTUNATELY everyone and their brother buys up every god damn domain you can think of so now we gotta pay $1500 for domains.. bullshit if you ask me.. Quote:
no credit card nothing needed.. well.. they never verified that information.. I had domains that never got shut down till the end of their period.. ahhh the good old days... |
Another reason to delete shitty domains in your portfolio :)
It's due to three reasons:
1. They can. 2. VeriSign is a fuckin' monopoly. 3. ICANN doesn't do its own job properly. ...mostly # 1 though.   |

:warning |
sucks when you have to shell out a few grand on renewals every year
Shit, I remember paying $70 for 2 years (only option), and having to fax in a letterhead, blood, hair, and urine samples..
