Census: Texas is the hot place to live

Quote:

By PAUL J. WEBER, Associated Press Writer

DALLAS - Four Texas metropolitan areas were among the biggest population gainers as Americans continued their trend of moving to the Sun Belt in 2006 and 2007, according to Census Bureau estimates to be released Thursday.

Dallas-Fort Worth added more than 162,000 residents between July 2006 and July 2007, more than any other metro area. Three other Texas areas ? Houston, Austin and San Antonio ? also cracked the top 10.

Atlanta saw the second-largest population jump with just over 151,000 new residents. Phoenix was third with more than 132,000, and was followed by Houston, Riverside, Calif., Charlotte, N.C., Chicago, Austin, Las Vegas and San Antonio.

Of the 50 fastest-growing metro areas, 27 were in the South and 20 were in the West. Two were in the Midwest, one ? Fayetteville, Ark. ? straddles the South and Midwest and none was in the Northeast.

Detroit lost more than three times as many people as any other metro area ? its population declined more than 27,300. Other areas losing more than 5,000 people were Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Ga., Youngstown, Ohio, and Buffalo, N.Y.

Experts credit much of the growth in the South to relatively strong local economies and housing prices that are among the most affordable in the U.S.

"People are running away from unaffordable housing, from the economic slowdown," said Karl Eschbach, a state demographer in Texas. "I would expect Texas to stay at the top of a slowing game."

According to figures compiled by Eschbach, 16 percent of Americans who moved to other states between July 2006 and July 2007 came to Texas, which led the nation for the second straight year in that category.

Home prices continue to be a big factor. A report earlier this month by Global Insight found that housing prices in the Dallas area were undervalued by as much as 30 percent.

Ann Sekesan, a pharmacy technician, moved her family from Pennsylvania to suburban Fort Worth last June after seeing spacious homes in Texas for under $200,000 on a television show.

"After we saw that on TV, my husband and I looked at each other and said, 'Have you ever been to Texas?" Sekesan said. "It's amazing the size of a home you can get down here. It's just incredible."

Good friend of mine just moved from Florida to Texas and loves it. I'm gonna go visit soon.

fuck, Atlanta saw the second-largest population jump with just over 151,000 new residents.

i wish they would stay away, atlanta is nice but getting WAY bad as far as traffic goes, and they are building more homes than there are people that want them or need them, so you drive down inside the perimeter and all you see are for sale signs

spanky part 2 03-27-2008 07:55 AM

Texas is the biggest pile of shit state. Nothing but flat and ugly, and then there is the state itself. Rednecks need a place to call home i guess, might as well be texas gets them farther away from the rest of us.

I remember sitting in 4 lanes of deadlocked traffic in Atlanta 20 years ago. I can't even imagine how bad it is now.

Never been there I see...

Austin is the only place in Texas ...lived there for 10 years and would move back in a second if only they had mountains.

ztik 03-27-2008 08:12 AM

I know 3 seperate people who just moved to austin. They have some really cheap housing there

I'd move to Austin, if I wasn't so worried about doing adult there.

Dont choke while sniffing your cappuccino induced farts there fella.. :1orglaugh

pocketkangaroo 03-27-2008 09:25 AM

There has been a lot of growth in Texas economically over the past few years. Some due to the influx of people from Mexico offering cheaper labor. The prices of homes are really nice down there and you can get a good deal. I'd move there if I didn't hate their weather so much. I'm a cold weather guy.

I often get rude and stupid remarks from the elite leftist assholes on this board who usually come from cesspools like NYC, NJ, and the land of fruits and nuts, Ca, simply because I list my location as Texas.

I never regret my move from the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts. The people I left behind can have Kerry and Kennedy, insanely high state taxes, the welfare state, generally dirty and congested conditions, expensive gas and oil prices, horrific traffic, and draconian gun laws, while I enjoy my nice big house on an acre lot, and relaxed lifestyle not possible in the open dump I left behind. Good riddance.

Actually my lot is covered with 40-50 ft. live oak trees , and has a creek running through it.

Probably better that the cardboard box under the underpass you call home. :1orglaugh I sure don't miss the clueless assholes like YOU I left behind.

Bad things happen when you leave NYC. Survival of the fittest, and the rest move elsewhere. I love hearing about pussies like you that couldn't take the big bad scary city. Fuck you we don't need you or want you.

You can have your plot of useless land in Texas. Come back in 20 years and see which is worth more. Your shrub covered land or my 3 bedroom brownstone.:1orglaugh

Would be nice, but to be honest a condo probably isnt the best place for drunk rowdy webmasters to party at hehe.

crockett 03-27-2008 07:33 PM

I said this two years ago.. Texas was gonna be the next boom state. Used to be Florida was where everyone went to get a little warmer weather and cheap houses.

Now that Florida's real estate skyrocketed to being insane, I knew Texas would end up being the next best place to go. In reality Florida sucks anymore. Nothing but crack heads and bums and now the average gettho house is 150k plus.

In Texas you can buy houses in Dallas area under 100k all day long. In Austin they are harder to find but it can still be done. When you pay 150k in Texas for a house you get twice the house as you would get in Florida.

I almost moved to Austin the start of last year, was going to buy a condo down on Town Lake. Fucking awesome town (super clean city) and I kick myself for not doing it, but it was a choice between expanding my biz or buying the condo.

Kinda sucks cause the condo I was looking at was about 5 mins from this..
