Someone stole all the AC units off our roof last night
Guess they are after the scrap copper. Copper = $3.90/pound.
Not sure why they took the whole units though. |
That sucks.
|
Damn! That's pretty crazy, seems like a lot of work.
|
My bad. They were on the back of the building. Police were just here.

wtf...that's really crazy...i hate those kinds of people
|
That's a huge problem in the city near where I live. Happens all the time.
The other thing they're taking now is catalytic converters. I think they have platinum in them. I may be wrong about that, but I know it's not copper. Some other kind of metal. |

yeah couple months ago there was reports on catalytic coverters being stolen from cars. have not heard much of it since. Last thing was people having their snow shovels stolen during the night if they were left out in front of garage
|
And to think I hollowed out my Cat and threw the innards in the trash!
|
How surreal.
|
Is that an apartment building or a freestanding house?
Sucks either way. I had someone try to siphon petrol from my car recently when I made the mistake of parking in an "overflow" area of a car park that was out of sight. There was less than $30 worth in there. |
Landmines.

In Central America, they say, "Better chain that down, someone may try to 'recycle' it" Gotta love their euphimism for robbing you blind!

damn savages....
how much is that stuff worth anyway? I can't imagine a AC unit sold to a metal recycling place can be worth much more than $10, catalytic converter is probably worth about the same... you have to saw it off, make noise, it's a lot of drama for $10... |
Are you going to build some sort of enclosure when the units are replaced?
|
Around here the thieves were going after the catalytic converters for the precious
metals and I think they were getting between $30 - $50 for each one. They were targeting Toyota Tundra trucks because they were easy to slide under and saw them off. Only took a few seconds. |
I had the Aluminum siding stolen out of my drive way. About a hundred pounds worth. luckily I had completed the renovation... Nobody saw anything, happened in the middle of the day. That stuff is loud when moving it around. The balls of some people maybe Anal Hobbit? lol

You get about 50-100 bucks for the metal in a $ 3000 AC unit. Its rampant down here too, we even had cases where they pulled copper wire out of the drywall of an unfinished home. Lot's of people are hungry right now, not just druggies. We went from 400 building permits per month down to 6 in our town, which leaves everybody that worked in construction without a job. AC snatchers do take a high risk down here. Castle Law, plus, where I live people have AK47s and street-sweepers at home. There is a fair chance that you bite the dust for 80 bucks in copper. |

We had some people stealing power lines here last summer. Two guys got fried trying to steal copper lines from a substation and caught the whole place on fire and blew power out here for half a day.

Happens a lot.
It's harder to explore train tunnels in Paris for the same reason: There has been a gang of copper strippers who hit the live train tunnels and strip them - They can get 25m^3 of copper for each tunnel section. There are 6 x 750V [but about ~100A] DC lines for the trains - they cut 5 of lines and steal them - the next train that goes through melts / explodes the last cable. Crazy shit. Also, when places get abandoned, normally for about a week after, you can't explore them - they're the domain of copper strippers, who are really, really aggressive about their territory. I remember hearing from one that they do 4 - 5 good strip jobs per year and come out w/ a 50 - 60k wage. |
I love how I provided all this information ;)

I really get pissed when I hear this shit. For all of you boxing fans that is why the world famous Kronk Gym in Detroit is no more. Back in September 2006 some shit bag thieves stole all of the copper pipes that pumped it's water, and Emanuel Steward ended up closing the gym rather than spending all of that money to replace the pipes...
|
How do you know they just didn't steal them so resell them? Summer is coming

Good idea, be careful the units need lots of airflow to prevent overheating. There are metal cages which bolt from the inside to the concrete pad and have a padlockable door. The idea is to make your neighbors units more attractive. |
So you live in Florida too...
