Working from home: Why can't others understand?

They think that because you work from home, you don't work. If they bother you and you tell them "I am working" they think you are blowing them off "Oh you can do that anytime you want". No. It is a Job, a business. I work just like you and twice as hard sometimes. When I am working, I am working.

Treat it the same as if I bothered you while you were sittign in your cubicle.

candyflip 03-25-2008 08:41 AM

Problem is, they want to be bothered while in their cubicle because working for someone else sucks.

I'm sure most here have dealt with or deal with this on a regular basis.

Greg - Adult Copywriters 03-25-2008 08:41 AM

amen to that.

L-Pink 03-25-2008 08:41 AM

Let your voice mail take all non-business calls while you're working.

stephane76 03-25-2008 08:42 AM

go back to work !

wpkings 03-25-2008 08:44 AM

You have to set ground rules before it gets out of hand, if you are just starting to work from home. If not, then you still need to make it clear that you are NOT available.

The way you do that is up to you as it's different in each situation...but don't be afraid of really taking a stand and locking yourself in the office/room etc for 8hours a day to show them you're serious about your business.

I had these problems when I first started working from home, and I'm sure plenty others have too.

spunkmister 03-25-2008 08:46 AM

someone bother you while you were trying to get that 50th post in a contest thread??

Jet - BANNED FOR LIFE 03-25-2008 08:46 AM

Look like the solution is to work from 11 pm to 7 am and sleep during the day.

:disgust

StarkReality 03-25-2008 08:49 AM

I'm rarely in office, but I always route my office number to the home number when working at home...so friends and family think I'm in office, hehe.

If you work from home all the time, definitely activate voice mail.

No, thats the worse thing you can do. Believe me, I've tried. You will be feeling like shit and looking like a walking corspe in less than a month. Just tell friends and family you are working, to not bother you. How hard is that for them to understand?

Get new friends,

DiamondJames 03-25-2008 08:53 AM

I hear you. People think that since I work from home that I am at their beckon call at all hours. If one of my friends has the day off, they just show up at my door wanting to hang out!

My GF has the hardest time understanding that. I'll be in the middle of shit and she'll barge in asking me to move some piece of furniture or something. If I tell her I'm working - she rolls her eyes like I'm full of shit and she starts on her nagging.

L-Pink 03-25-2008 09:05 AM

Then again, you call this working ..... or are you on a lunch break?

My GF is the same way. No matter how many times I nicely explain it to her she just can't grasp the idea. To her sitting in front of a computer at home is about talking to friends and doing fun stuff.

Socks 03-25-2008 09:34 AM

FRIENDS, LOVED ONES...

I can't talk to you right now, I'm hard at work on GFY, trying to collect these...FANTASTIC PRIZES (to supplement my low income)

mrwilson 03-25-2008 09:34 AM

If you're working, just dont answer its simple.

Answer when you are done, or every couple hours when i have a break (like now)

Now I am working in my office but when I used to work at home that was a real problem.

pornguy 03-25-2008 09:50 AM

I have no problem working at home, And my friends are all working at their homes or offices, so they dont bug me at all.

Rochard 03-25-2008 10:06 AM

I don't have a problem working from home. I have regular hours, 9am to 6pm, with lunch at 1pm every day. My (home) office door is closed during working hours, no distractions from the wife etc.

It's nice really.

spunkmister 03-25-2008 10:23 AM

not sure whats funnier...Jet thinking that what he does is considered "work" or the fact that he's deluded himself into thinking he actually has friends who would bother him.

It's a good thread none the less. Back when I started working from home I thought it would be no big deal. Wow was I wrong. I have lost girlfriends over it, had family issues, and other shit happen I could have never anticipated. It got to the point that I decided to rent a small office just to avoid the problems.

As for the girlfriends, wives, friends rolling their eyes or saying things like "your not busy" or "your just playing on the computer" it is due to them slowly become jealous and then angry at your lifestyle. I had a recent girlfriend who became crazy over it eventually led to us breaking up. She had to leave for work at 7am and it drove her nuts I started when I wanted to.

If you can afford it I would recommend renting a small office and spending at least 5-6 hours a day there. You will be amazed at how much more productive you will become without the distractions. Just be sure not to tell to many people where your office is as my first one turned into a party hangout within a few weeks.

i absolutely agree

You want us to believe that not only do you work, but you have a g/f?

Fat chance.

dennisthemenace 03-25-2008 11:11 AM

I found people working 1 of two extremes... either calling, coming by, emailing, ICQ, etc... just because I'm home.. OR.. the ones that use me being "busy" as an excuse to never bother with me again..

Someone could be in the hospital and I'd hear about it through the grapevine.. when I'd ask, they'd say, "I didn't want to bother you, I know how busy you are".. not to be sexist (because I don't believe I am) but everyone in this group are women.. :girl

Exactly. Return calls, if you really want to, stay out of im's, and keep your door closed.

Quagmire 03-25-2008 11:52 AM

My father in law wanders in, sits down and bothers me all the time when I'm trying to work from home. He is under the impression that I can always finish the work I am doing later. He doesn't seem to clue in that I am talking with people on ICQ and working on stuff that needs to get done.

the difference between you and an average surfer is that they actually have money to buy things while you spend your days "working" on getting that elusive 50th post in contest threads.

Atleast be honest with yourself, stop trying to convince others that you actually "work", and the only one bothering you while you are posting is your mom trying to get your lazy ass out of the basement.
