The 40-ish crowd... please help!!

OK... so I was hanging out with some friends at a bbq this weekend and we got on the subject of obscure movies that haunted us when we were kids. NOT mainstream movies that you saw at the theatre, but rather the shit they showed you in elementary school or perhaps stuff you saw on TV after school specials. Being that I was about 9 years older than the next oldest person... everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I talked about some trippy movie that involved pancakes... can't for the life of me remember the title. There was also Shirley Jackson's "the lottery"... a personal fave of mine. Two others I can recall... one was where a classroom of kids were taught about racism and were separated by the color of their eyes in two groups... and another where some kid was on a bus and then he got off and collapsed in the snow and it was about his sickness and/or recovery. That's all I can remember about that one! I saw all of these in the 70s and if anyone else can look in their minds eye that perhaps shared these experiences and recall titles or any clues that can help me turn up a useful google search... please let me know!!

Not sure I saw any of these, though I'm sure I did. Is the lottery one where they stone some woman to death and has a pre-famous Ed Begley Jr in it? Mostly I remember seeing a lot of Scott Baio after school specials.

Ok so you are a lot older than you want to admit.

Its ok. We wont think poorly of you.

But my grandfather left his cane if you need one. :)

CDSmith 03-25-2008 08:10 AM

The only one of those I recognize without a doubt is The Lottery. The others, not so much.

We were shown one in the 70's about kids playing on top of snowbanks, and what can happen. It showed two kids play-fighting on a 5 or 6 foot snowbank along a side street, they tumbled down and got nailed by a car. It was pretty chilling to a room full of 8 yr olds.

YES! The Lottery actually gave me nightmares...

MichelleB 03-25-2008 08:11 AM

I remember "My mom's having a baby", "Psst Hammerman's after you" and the one where the kid had a problem with wetting the bed. Give me a few I will think of some more.

Oh man... I don't think I saw that one. That would have screwed me up (more.)

I remember that. Kid makes a wiseass comment to the school bully and then gets his face punched in for it.

It had a good ending though, as I recall.

The bed wetting one was pretty rough....I remember he became a successful track star because he always had to run home to pull in the sheets his mother would hang out the window...

webair 03-25-2008 09:04 AM

Well... that was what the 70s was all about. Apocalyptic shit everywhere lol... "entertainment" often reflects the times. Thankfully my recollection of much of it is hazy due to my youth at the time. I would imagine being a teenager or older during that time would have seemed kinda hopeless.

viki 03-25-2008 09:18 AM

I haven't seen any of those movies, but we did read The Lottery (it's a short story, too) and it freaked out a good portion of the class.
