Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473107/
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...96181471292925

Wonderful documentary, typical commie propaganda.
Wal-Mart blamed for everything from overpopulation in China to rapes and shootings in America.
African American victimization, anti-capital and anti-competition speech, revolution predicted, worker utopia, we got it all.
Arkansas and small town (White) America ridiculed.
No "other side of the story".

Wal-Mart net margin: 3%, similar to any other large retailer from industrialized nations.

Margins 5 times smaller than most tech, law, real estate development, financial firms in New York and California (with cheap money borrowed from Japan and the rest of the world, and loaned to American workers at much greater cost). Wal-Mart is a retailer dealing with the real economy, and doesn't sell paper or dreams for a living.

Before trying to teach others how to run their business and their community, maybe Greenwald should start by cleaning up his own backyard.

Most violent cities in America are New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Miami.

New York and California rank near the bottom for middle class housing affordability, but rank near the top for billionaires.

Talk about violence, social justice, inequality, and worker exploitation. It's all right in front of your eyes.

I think some ppl should better shut their fucking mouth.

great fucking documentary, and while it is VERY one sided at times and a little inaccurate, the overall message is spot on...walmart is a shady fucking company with little to no ethics in the higher up levels of management

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-24-2008 05:53 PM

watched this one quite a while back now, and i agree that it's a great documentary. there were some points that they didn't touch on that perhaps they could have. walmart really is a monster corporation. their demographics team has their fingers in everything, virtually everywhere. they have better researchers in the field than the united states government employs. they know every little shithole town in north america, and have advanced knowledge of what areas are set for an economic boom 5-10 years in advance.

if you're looking at getting into real estate. FOLLOW THE NEW WALMARTS. property value in their areas is almost sure to skyrocket. if walmart is planning new development in a small community, it's almost always because they see a population move heading in that direction.

tony286 03-24-2008 05:56 PM

I love when people defend a company that encouraged its employees to use government programs then give them a decent wage and benefits. News flash we are paying for walmarts employees your ok with that?

tony286 03-24-2008 05:57 PM

Also a documentary doesnt have to be equal also not everything is 50-50.

Diligent 03-24-2008 06:24 PM

Saw it and agree with tony404...

How can You accept a company that obviously has mooching off the taxpayers as a part of their business idea?
That also gives them one hell of a competetive advantage, thus enabling them to spread and root as they have.

Barefootsies 03-24-2008 06:25 PM

Yep. Saw it the other night. It more a less mirrors the PBS version you can watch online at your local PBS station website.

Look for "Frontline" on the site.

Deputy Chief Command 03-24-2008 06:26 PM

they have Wal Marts in China too . . I was there couple of times .. the Chinese seemed to love em . .

Iron Fist 03-24-2008 06:32 PM

Let me know when Part II comes out mmmkay? Old News.

viki 03-24-2008 06:33 PM

I haven't seen the documentary but I read The Walmart Effect. The book isn't entirely one sided although it does lean a lot. It brings up a lot of interesting points and cites real examples of Walmart's effect on other companies.

see, here is the thing, after that documentary I was really pissed and went to walmart and talked to a few people there, a lot of what was said int hat doc was VERY old policy at walmart and hasn't been that way in a good number of years

while I agree that walmart is pure evil and a really horrible company with horrible owners, I think that if someone is going to do a documentary they should be using current fact and not information that is outdated

same with michael moore, i love him and what he does to get attention to issues that NEED addressing, but he has a tendency to stretch the truth or leave out important facts

I got a bunch of books on documentaries was thinking of dabbling in it. Nowhere does it say you have to be balanced. Actually once the documentary came out walmart started offering more benefits to their employees. I love when people these documenmtaries arent fair but you have faux news and talk radio pundits running total bullshit over 40 hrs a week and no one has problem with that. lol

tony286 03-24-2008 06:40 PM

I love when people say these documentaries that expose things arent fair and one sided. When you have over 40 hrs a week of one sided right wing hate radio.

farkedup 03-24-2008 06:53 PM

the people working at walmart are too stupid to work anywhere better. They have no shortage of workers...

NOBODY FORCES these well below average IQ people to work there. yes plenty of people work there through HS and college but those "lifers" seriously give them an IQ test and you'll find those people are insanely stupid.

The kind of people that work at walmart also have a very high tendency to smoke which only makes all their other issues worse.

dude, did I ever say documentaries HAVE to be one sided? LOL

I am just saying I dont' like it, that is it

get off it man, stop trying to bait me with worthless arguments, it gets old, trivial arguments aren't my thing

Jace 03-24-2008 07:01 PM

my point is, when a documentary comes out claiming to be facts, I lose respect for the documentary maker when it later comes out that things weren't as they seemed

you are welcome to love that style of documentary all you want, I don't

if I listened to one sided right wing hate radio then you would have an point, but I have never, and won't ever, listen to that crap

Kevsh 03-24-2008 07:28 PM

If the Industrial Revolution was the death of innovation, WalMart is the nail in the coffin. Society is cyclical, and at some point in the future it's plausible that their type of massive store will disappear and we'll return to mom-and-pop shops.

Hey, it may not be likely but it would sure be nice. Imagine, driving down the street and NOT seeing a Home Depot, iHop, McDonald's, etc. on every corner.

One can only hope.

Boycot Wal-Mart.

Nobody forced me to reply to a below average intelligence post but I still have to. The vast majority of smokers are in fact poor and they don't smoke because they're too stupid to realize it's bad for them they smoke because it's the only 10 min of pleasure they get in their lives.

Well that and addiction and shit but the point I was trying to make is that the world is shades of grey.

hmm, news flash...
1. no one is forcing anyone to work there
2. no one is forcing anyone to shop there

If you don't like their policies, don't work there and don't shop there, why is it so complicated? The problem is most people bitch and whine, but they still go to wallmart to buy stuff because it's few bucks cheaper...

so in that case they provide a service to those that cannot afford any better...but the reality is that most Americans whether they can afford it or not want cheaper items, and when I was living in Cali and went to a Walmart it wasnt just the "down on their luck" families shopping there...you got all kinds from all income levels.

Im not an advocate of Walmart but putting the balme on them soley is kinda laughable, yeah they have some shady tactics...but a lot of major coporations do...it's the way they run their businesses and get the bottom line they want...it may not be right but thats just how it is. Blame has to be put on consumers as well for constantly demanding lower prices and therfore allowing places like Walmart to thrive.

xmas13 03-24-2008 09:26 PM

I didn't know selling pornography required special skills, or higher intelligence.

We don't work in the same business.

Your contempt for hard working Americans (ps: who are also your customers) is non-sense.

You know what it is in fact? Self-hatred.

Self-injury as self-hatred
Self-harm is a psychological disorder, which may involve self-hatred, where the subject feels compelled to physically injure (or insult) themselves.

Ask any psychologist.

If you are Einstein, I'm Freud. Nice to meet ya.

Or because they are the only ones with a presence in the fly-over states.

I would never consider walking into a Walmart here (if I even knew where one was), but when in Indiana, I don't have many options.

Walmart does effect the little guy and while I just bought my flat screen there due to price I do believe that the little guy has overall been hurt by Walmart stores moving in. Wow I sure am glad the government broke up AT&T.... :)
