ok a win98se question

Im upgrading my aunts old old computer sony viao 333mhz to win98se. I think it has 95 on it so they couldnt put a wifi card in it because the drivers go back to 98se. I have the cd for se but I think I threw out the floppy that came with it. Do I need the floppy to install it on the system? Its been so long since I did a 98se install I forgot and I was a beta tester for 98se for microsoft.lol.

Why not just buy a new computer? you can get one for $200 now a days, seems hardly worth the trouble to mess around with 10 year old computer...

Im trying to help them and Im not buying them a computer. its something for her nephew who is 13 to fuck around on.

no, ...if you have Win98SE boot CD (original).

Does her machine support booting from CD? If she is simply using it for email / light internet usage, install a light linux distro on it, or like woj said, have her get a new box.

On old computers like that I think you need the floppy to install win98SE. Reason being is that I don't think they allowed you to boot from the CD drive back then (motherboard limitation)

It also helps to have another machine running 98SE handy. You can use that system to automatically make the boot disk and have it load CD-ROM drivers onto the disk so everything is nice and simple.

Copying the win98SE disc onto that computers hard drive will speed things up too, that way you can install from the hard drive instead of loading from the CD-ROM, which will probably be slow as fuck on an old PC like that.

If you have another old PC lying around running 98, then you can make a new boot disk with it, check in the control panel, there is an option in there somewhere.

check BIOS first. If theres no BOOT FROM CD option - you can always use SMART BOOT MANAGER (booted from floppy)

when you initially start setup, it should give you the option to create a boot disk if you need one.

although, i thought you could boot from cd on 95/98.

it's been a long long long time since i have messed around with either of those two versions of windows, but if i remember correctly from my old gateway you should be able to boot from the cd.

FlowerKid 03-22-2008 11:29 AM

Normally it's no problem to boot from the Win98 cd.
As suggested i would also copy the subfolder win98 from the CD to something like c:\install\win98 and then cd to that folder and run setup. The Win98 CD isn't needed anymore and if installed from the disk, windows will not ask for the CD at any time, even when installing drivers...

Maybe Google can help. Try....Win98SE boot disk...:)

Holy freakin' ADD.

You can install 98 from within 95, so long as you have the CD drivers loaded.

A much easier solution though, is to just xcopy d:\windows c:\win98 /s /e, and run the installer from there.

Maybe before you go to all this trouble you should tell your aunt that a 13 year old is not going to be satisfied with a 10 year old computer. He is thinking COMPUTER, I can do shit, I can download songs, I can play games etc. etc. But instead it will be like "I can do SHIT"
