Child Fatally Shot in Frayser
By Lauren Johnson

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WHBQ FOX13 myfoxmemphis.com) --
Police are investigating the shooting death of a six-year-old in a case that appears to be a tragic accidental shooting. According to investigators, a seven-year-old is being questioned about a handgun the children found in a couch at home.

According to prevention expert Susan Helms, of LeBonheur Children's Hospital, 9 out of 10 times, having a gun inside a home for protection, results in someone being hurt.

That's what happened Monday and now there's a warning for parents who pack protection.

Shortly after nine a.m. Monday, a deadly gunshot fired from a silver revolver sent the older child's mother into a panic after the six-year-old boy was shot in the face.

"The mother ran out of the apartment and flagged down one of the residents to call police," said Monique Martin, of the Memphis Police Department.

Memphis police officers swarmed the scene at the Greenbrier Apartments in Frayser to investigate. Police said three adults and two children were inside the first floor apartment at the time of the shooting. Police said the kids found the loaded gun in the couch.

"As we understand at this point, these two children were in a room at the time the adults heard the gunshots," said Martin.

While police investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Helms called the shooting death tragic. She urged parents not to keep guns in their homes, but if they insist, she offered a few safety precautions:

Keep the gun in a safe. Never have the gun loaded. Keep the gun locked and keep the ammunition in a separate place from where the gun is stored.

"Kids are just curious," she said. "I don't think parents understand that they are strong enough by the age of three to pull the trigger on many guns, and until you're about eight-years-old, you don't understand the difference between a toy gun and a real gun. Or you don't understand the consequences behind it."

Helms said it her advice sounds obvious, but parents are still making simple mistakes. She said parents should continue to teach children not to touch guns, to tell an adult if they see one and practice the behavior continuously.

Gun locks can be purchased at a hardware store for as little as $10.

No charges have been filed against anyone inside the home at this time.

I bet that gun the kids found in the couch was there for protection! But wait, it ended up killing them!

Wow! Guns rule! They make society safer! :thumbsup

When anyone other than the gun owner is in the home, guns should be locked up.

MikeVega 03-18-2008 07:33 AM

My guns are always locked up .. I'm the only one with a key. it sucks when people get hurt but its also a fucked up world and i have to protect myself. :(

The only guns that rule are Guns'n'Roses!!

notoldschool 03-18-2008 08:22 AM

Most people that own guns are cops and people with a very low IQ.

Evil Chris 03-18-2008 08:25 AM

Gun enthusiasts will just blame this one on the parents and be done with it as usual.

dready 03-18-2008 08:36 AM

Leaving a loaded handgun in a couch is like leaving poison on the lower shelves, not fencing off your pool, and letting them play with knives.

Michaelious 03-18-2008 08:41 AM

Logic and irony are just lost on these gun nuts!

Chris,

Are you against all gun ownership or just handguns?

DateDoc 03-18-2008 08:54 AM

The 2nd Amendment and a city's right (Washington DC in this case) to control gun ownership are being argued in front of the US Supreme Court today.

I'm against the "own one because you can" mentality. I was in the service for 15 years and have fired many different weapons from 9mm handguns to M72s. People don't seem to appreciate just how deadly and dangerous firearms really are. If they did appreciate it, we wouldn't be reading stories like this one. The gun mentality (especially in the USA) is straight up ridiculous in my opinion.

On the other hand, I do understand why many people want to own one for personal or family protection and I'm not beyond buying into that mentality (somewhat). I just think there are WAY too many of them out there in the wrong hands and that is a shame. It's also a shame that people feel the need to own them in the first place. Rifles are fine if you hunt of course, but handguns should be in the hands of law enforcement and law enforcement only. If that were the case, it would be a much different world. Now I know that gun enthusiasts will bring back the whole "self determination" thing over and over... but I just don't believe in that, nor do I have to because I'm Canadian. We own a lot of guns up here too, but the mentality surrounding them is quite different.

Basically, I'm not much for guns because they do more harm than good.

Blame the irresponsible owner, not the gun laws or guns.

Don RELISH 03-18-2008 10:38 AM

This argument always reminds me of the Eddie Izzard quote:

"And the National Rifle Association says that, "Guns don't kill people, people do,? but I think the gun helps, you know? I think it helps. I just think just standing there going, "Bang!" That's not going to kill too many people, is it?"

In Canada we have specific laws about gun storage. Most of the "precautions" that were listed in the article are actually federal law here. These are the kinds of gun laws I don't mind obeying.

Would be interesting to compare accidental gun injuries / deaths in Canada to the United States to see if this actually helps.

I believe handguns have to be in a locked compartment.

If you have a rifle or shotgun then the minimum requirement is a trigger lock and ammo stored separately.

american pervert 03-18-2008 10:45 AM

well, seems to me the parents are stupid for leaving it out, and luckily they helped out the gene pool by killing off some of their crotch fruit.

AdPatron 03-18-2008 10:48 AM

The problem with keeping the gun in a safe in a separate place from the ammo is that if someone comes into your home, bu the time you open the safe, get the gun, then get the ammo and load your gun....you will probably already be dead!!!

If you have your gun in a safe, then it is OK to have the ammo in there too, since they are both locked up. The key is having the safe somewhere close by. (like your bedroom)

If you just have a trigger lock on your gun, and have the gun shoved under your bed, etc. then they want you to store the ammo separately.
