ideas for foreign webmasters loosing money over dollar downfall

this is not a wining thread, i'm trying to find a way to minimize the money loss in income this shit is giving me.
because I get paid in dollars and don't have much expense in dollars - i'm loosing tons of cash.

my local currency is not euro or dollars

at first I thought of switching to sponsors using euro for payment - that worked partly as the euro is falling too but not as much as mr.green.
another idea was to recycle a certain amount of income to paid traffic or any other kind of expense, that worked for a while but now the dollar is only going further and further down and I need to pay the rent.

Move to the US, a dollar here is always worth a dollar no matter what

klinton 03-18-2008 02:10 AM

move somewhere where dollar is still worth something :(

btw. i'm in the same situation as you, from 2002 to 2008 dolar dropped from 4 pln to 2 pln :(

webjoker 03-18-2008 02:42 AM

any sponsors that bill their customers in any other currency besides EU or $ ? a currency that is actually more stable these days ?

I'm in that exact same boat. It's like 2.25PLN now. It was 2.6PLN when i got to poland 8 months ago. The I lost like 8k PLN with money in my canadian account just sitting there :(

My solution now is i typically try to bill in euros for larger jobs. If i quote 2000 euro, its $3000USD now but by the time i actually get paid when i finish the job, it will still be 2000 euro...

If i quoted 3000USD by the time I finish the project its worth much less :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Here's another tip:

Work more and/or smarter

fraggle 03-18-2008 04:07 AM

buy assets in usd and liquidate them later. set up a business in the us using dollars hedging bets on a increase in usd value post elections. save dollars for later. buy depreciated US stocks with large asset base which are likely to be undervalued at a time of economic depression and hold them. otherwise focus on being paid in euros.

I am pretty sure that most of us that live in a Pound or Euro society have long known we had to work harder but you have to do that just to stay at the same wage.

On our new sites we will be doing this, will link it to the UK pound.

But no one here likes me so I don't expect anyone to be swayed by the prospect of earning money in a currency that will be in the shit house soon and then in the sewers.

We were getting 35 CZK to the $, it was as high as 40. Now it's at 15 and when you tell me I'm going broke you know why. 50% of our income has gone. This without the industry slow down.

buy forwards, futures or options to hedge your position and put a floor on your potential losses.

This is what I am trying to do with part of my $ income, I usually double the value once it's sold here in Sweden.

I thought you were going to offer some ideas, not ask us for advice lol-

CarlosTheGaucho 03-19-2008 07:51 AM

As I always advice - keep the dollars and spend them on the dollar market..

I bought me the most hilarious stuff in and from the States - electronics, clothing and all kinds of shit is incredibly cheap..

I have mixed in a number of sponsors that pay out in pounds into my sponsor collection. They still determine that amount of pounds you get from the amount of dollars you earned with them but it is nice to get a check in pounds regardless.

It won't cost less, since we are also paid in dollars. It will cost the same. that is the problem.

Wow, nice. It's more like 15€ where I live.

ilbb 03-21-2008 08:21 AM

the only way is to work more, more clever

woj 03-21-2008 08:59 AM

The only way is to just spend USD or invest it... buy traffic from the US sellers, hire US designers, programmers, etc... maybe invest in some US stocks, or buy some US real estate, etc....
