I typically will use a router in bridge mode with a high gain antenna connected to my labtop with an ethernet cable when I want maximum distance. Personally, I prefer the routers that can run dd-wrt

I have a linksys card on my desktop, and I can pick up the neighbor's signals at times.

What he said....I'm using the antenna that looks like a mini satellite dish right now...It's picking up my parent's neighbors signal nicely :) . Without it, I'd have absolutely no signal around here.
