What kind of web host does this?

Got an interesting call this morning.

This guy read my article in Website Magazine so went to check out our site and had what I thought was an interesting question.

He asked if we somehow throttled or filtered the search engine spiders so they could only visit his site a certain number of times per day.

I was certain that I must have misunderstood the question, but apparently not. He told me he has dealt with hosts that would only let Googlebot hit his site a maximum of six times a day.

I have never heard of such a thing. Have you?

That's bad news bears - blocking/limiting/filtering a spider can hurt your SE rankings

Sounds like a host with no brain.

Well, as he was seeking an SEO hosting solution I think filtering like that would be rather self-defeating.

Kinder than what I was thinking.

We want our customers to make less money so there is less chance they will pay for our hosting services.

I see the occasional search result where canned shopping cart scripts are complaining that the user (Googlebot) is loading pages too fast and has been blocked. :Graucho

Did you really want an answer, or did you just want people to know you wrote an article in some magazine?

Serious question, I already announced I was published a month ago.
