So what's the problem? Other than more clearly showing that Holland is part of the NL but it is not completely unclear either from the map that is their intention.

What? Do you want the word "Netherlands" to be larger than "Holland"?

This is as bad as whether citizens of USA can call themselves "Americans" when USA is just part of the Americas.

the official name is The Netherlands

Holland is just a part of it and a province, its confusing since for instance all export products say Made In Holland while theyre made in the Netherlands and not even in the Holland Part.

I think we made a mess and noone gets it anymore now.

Exactly. So what is so wrong with the map? Slightly confusing maybe but not at the level of an insult. You could make the words Netherlands larger or you could move it to the left over the Holland provinces. But calling people "idiots" or saying "they don't have a clue" for something that is notoriously confusing anyway?

There was a debate on GFY in about 2003 over what "Holland" even was and even some Dutch people had it wrong. I'll even bet some of the souvenir cups at Schiphol have a similar map ;-)

ADL Colin 03-13-2008 06:47 AM

On this note, can someone improve my GPS? It is retarded sometimes.

Exactly.

I find it rather quaint that these guys who insult everyone for not knowing what the mystery is, all the while acting like they themselves are the only ones with "a clue", always refrain from clearing up said mystery.

Leads me to wonder if they're just as "clueless" as everyone else and just pretending.

here ya all go

ecently in The Times Q&A section a question was asked about Netherlands vs Holland as the correct name for that country. The answer said that Holland strictly refers only to two southern provinces. Nederlands is the official name and appears on currency and stamps. Incidenatlly, in spite of this, the locals still shout for Holland at international football matches! Later, a supplementary question was published. Today, that following extra question was answered. I found it interesting and thought I'd share it.
**********************************************
I was interested to read about Holland and the Netherlands (Q&A, February 25), but where do the "Dutch" come from?

In medieval times the Germanic people with whom the ordinary Englishman most frequently came into contact were sailors who lived on the other side of the North Sea. They probably described themselves as "Deutsch", which was later corrupted in English and written as "Dutch".
In contrast, the "Germanic" people with whom the English aristocracy came into contact were the aristocracy of the Holy Roman Empire. The mutual language of communication that they used was Latin, hence the area from which they came was described as "Germania", which later became "Germany".
To this day, notwithstanding the atrocities of 1940-45, the Dutch national anthem has references to the country's Germanic origin - the opening lines of the anthem (written about 1569) being "Wilhelmus van Nassouwe / Ben ik van Duitsen bloed" which translates as: "I am William of Nassau / Of Germanic descent".
Martin Vlietstra, Fleet, Hampshire

From the late Middle Ages to the 16th century, when linguistic distinctions were not sharply defined, the English often
described anyone, speaking a Germanic language as "Doch" or "T(h)eutonicus", heedless of whether the subject hailed from Antwerp, Hamburg or Nuremberg. A survey of aliens in London in 1568 found 5,225 "Dutch parsons" but only a meagre 22 "Garmans".
Once the northern provinces of the Habsburg Low Countries gained their political independence in the early 17th century, it became usual to distinguish between Dutch and German speakers and their cultures. "Dutch" derives from the Middle Dutch duuts or diets which ultimately stem from the old Germanic word theudo meaning "people".

The nomenclature for the Low Countries has long puzzled foreigners, and no wonder. In the early modern period there were perhaps eight different ways of referring to the region, its inhabitants and cultures.

Sarah_Jayne 03-13-2008 08:14 AM

I get it but I will say that when any news happens in the States that is in a State other than California, New York or Florida that maps and information given by European broadcasters is pretty rubbish too. This is particularly if it is breaking news and the researchers haven't done their work yet.

The Dutch hate us for our freedom! :1orglaugh

The scary fact is, after 6 years of war, most of us Americans couldn't go to a globe and point to Iraq. Sad, but true. Honestly, I'm not even sure that I could find it in less than a 30 seconds. I'd have to really look for it. Also, I'm one of those people who didn't realize that Holland was a province and not a country on to itself. The scariest part of that is the fact I was trained for the European Theater when I was in the army. I was a (shitty) German linguist and I had friends who were Dutch linguists. I never made it to Europe though. (That damned wall came down.)

And where's er, Dutch-land? And how does this relate to the Amstel Light versus Heineken beer conflict?

Most people who have been to The Netherlands have only been to Amsterdam which is a shame. It's probably the worst place to go to get a snapshot of what that country is all about.

I still think Amsterdam is a great place and a lot of fun too, but I hope to one day return to places like Texel, Apeldoorn, and Nijmegan just to name a few places.

jalami 03-13-2008 09:40 AM

To understand this phrase it's necessary to know some history. At the end of the second world war the German economy was in ruins, many resources were in short supply, food was scarce, the population were desperate. The provisional German government of the time had more people then it could feed and more land then it could control. Civil war was a real possibility. In order to solve the two biggest problems of the time a bold plan was devised. The sub-human, failed Nazi era genetic experiments, and any other humans deemed a drain on the scarce resources would be rounded up and dumped in the west of the country. This area was chosen as it is the crappy bit with no landscape and would likely fall into the sea in a few years anyway. Simply shooting these people was ruled out as inhumane. Within 5 years 80% were dead but some had managed to survive by methods such as picking fruit and berries, adapting to eat mud, or selling insurance door to door. The people with the skills to survive taught others and the Dutch nation was born.

In the following years the Dutch were taught to fish by George Lucas and founded a religion based on herring, bicycles, and a once in a lifetime pilgrimage to the one hill in rijswijk. Due to interbreeding many of the traits engineered into the nazi era genetic experiments were distributed amongst the population. The more common of these traits are listed below.

Genetically engineered Nazi traits (GEN) vs. Dutch (D) traits
(GEN) Endurance ----> Did not transfer, rather they took up drugs, and now ignore everything.
(GEN) Bravery ----> (D) Dunno where that one went
(GEN) Physical strength ----> (D) That also disappeared.
(GEN) Physical size ----> (D)The Dutch average height is 4 meters.
(GEN) Efficiency ----> (D) Somehow German efficiency became a love of both rules and drugs.

It's kinda like Australia. (NOo.. not Austria!)

They need to just keep sending over the buttery cheese & yummy baked goods, 'cause they have no flipping clue on how to build (ski) gondolas!
:thumbsup

i'm interested. Off the top off their head who could draw a map of where Gabon is? How about naming a neighboring country? How many of us even know that Gabon is a country? Is it? Did I spell it right?

Who is the leader of Gabon? Every one of us should know that and there is good reason especially because of recent political events. Why is that important?

somewhere in W-Africa, close to Senegal or Ghana I think

MediaManiac 03-14-2008 04:46 AM

hahah great thread.. lmao with those post.

the only big thing i see in the pic is just that north and south holland are combined what's not correct..

look it at a bigger scale. they point this part of the netherlands on the map and saying this is 'holland/netherland/dutchie land' or whatever you want to call it. fox is giving you the wrong information about where this country is on the map.. if someone else puts on a map of this country then you will be confused because fox showed you the wrong map of this country..

Yes, because it is actually Pennsylvania Deutsch (aka Pennsylvania German) but people (as always) just shortened it down. I am PA Dutch/German and you should have heard that rants my grandfather could go on about not being Dutch. Up where they live people actually will call themselves Pennsylvania German over Pennsylvania Dutch.

Either way..kick ass food.
