Ordered Vonage, please post your experience here.

I'll be moving a bit around(not in the same locale), so I transferred my local # to a vonage VoIP one that I will carry with me(yeah you can do that, it's pretty cool).

They gave me the adapter for free, but then charged me a 40$ activation fee and 20$ for shipping their kit(which obviously is where they make their money).

Hope the service is good. Any tips/experience you would like to share with me?

BV 03-11-2008 01:17 PM

i think aaron had a nightmare wirh them

LilBro 03-11-2008 01:18 PM

do u have time to cancel???? WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. They suck!!! worst Customer support too.... Stick with Cable phone.... Vonage SUCKS... numerous dropped calls and calls not even coming in...

Evil E 03-11-2008 01:21 PM

Yeah but does it have to do with your Internet connection or straight up them?

Thing is... it needs to be a company that is able to transfer canadian DIDs(VoIP phone number).

If you have a better suggestion, please post it here.

Mr Pheer 03-11-2008 01:21 PM

I've had Vonage for about 3 years but lately thier caller ID mostly says "unavailable" or just says the state the call comes from, plus they dont have any sort of call filtering.

Just dropped them and got voicepulse, which so far works much better and has some cool call filtering options.

pornguy 03-11-2008 01:24 PM

I just have the regular service with them which is ok, but I have never tried that.

Eriic 03-11-2008 01:25 PM

If you call 911 they no longer have a straight access to your info. you could die before Vonage gives them your info. You lose direct access to emergency response and I don't like that at all!

selena 03-11-2008 01:29 PM

I have had Vonage with Enhanced 911 for a couple of years with no issues.

shermo 03-11-2008 01:30 PM

I hate mine..about to switch to somebody else. Almost all of my incoming calls never go through, or when I pickup, neither party can hear each other.

I have the top tier of cable modem packages from Cox and rarely any net downtime. Deductive reasoning says it's the service.

Evil E 03-11-2008 01:32 PM

This is only for a roaming phone number... I won't use it as my primary phone line... I won't call 911 from it anyways :)

LilBro 03-11-2008 01:34 PM

its vonage, not the cable company...

gornyhuy 03-11-2008 01:41 PM

I had some bad results early on but I called and bitched about it and things magically got better.

You definitely can't be running any torrents or any heavy network traffic, otherwise YOU sound like a bad cell phone because of the upstream, but they sound fine to you...

Also, customer support is very slow - I waited 3 months to merge 2 accounts and add a new virtual number.

BUT, aside from all the above, I've had an overall pretty good experience for 3 years now. I use the fax number, multiple virtual numbers, and it all works great and consistently. I have no problems with calls coming in, connections, line quality, caller id, voicemail, etc. :2cents:

the alchemist 03-11-2008 01:49 PM

I've been using Vonage everyday for over 3 years with no problem whatsoever and I really like those web features, free LD and all the free services.

If you do have a torrent client running, just limit the upload rate so it can't use your full upload capacity.

dready 03-11-2008 02:44 PM

Using it here for two years and I fucking LOVE it!

BIG :thumbsup

Big Red Machine 03-11-2008 02:49 PM

The phone itself sucks, the battery is always low. Even keeping it on its base doesn't help, 1 long phone call and its Tits Up

BJ 03-11-2008 02:56 PM

vonage sucks. www.packet8.net much better and not likely to go out of business like vonage.

slapass 03-11-2008 03:32 PM

I use Skype and it rocks in the house but does not work so well when I forward to my brazilian cell phone. We can hear each other but it is mostly to say i will call u back.

Why would vonage go out of business?

FreakinWebmaster 03-11-2008 03:42 PM

Fuck Vonage!

I had the worst experience ever with this company, they could not port my phone number after trying 5 times and they wanted me to try again... I said NO, and everytime I wanted to talk to a manager than mentioned none was on duty. Cancel within 30 days quick! I would not send my worst enemy to Vonage! They can go FUCK THEMSELVES!

I went with Sunrocket, they were amazing! but they went out of business which sucked ass, but their customer support was great! now I am with Packet8 and I have no complaints with them. Its the exact same service as Vonage but only $200/year with fantastic support!

They've been having some serious financial issues for quite some time. It was made public late last year.

Anyway, I love vonage. I have been with them for years without having a problem that wasn't the cable company's fault. I did sign up with Skype last month and got a skype in number and all that shit only to discover that all my skype out calls showed up as "unknown" and nobody will answer those calls. I'll stick with vonage as long as I can.

Yngwie 03-11-2008 03:50 PM

I'll stick with my cable phone.. no matter how much I'm downloading or whatever else I'm doing to use up my connection the phone is not affect, ever. fuck this outdated voip shit.

$5 submissions 03-11-2008 03:53 PM

I haven't had any problems with it. I use it to take calls from the US and make calls to the US.

Tanker 03-11-2008 03:54 PM

I love my vonage account I have had it now for 5+ years!

I use it all the time as my main number, when we travel I pack it up and take it with me. When I leave the house I forward it to my cell phone or sometimes let it simul ring both at home and on my cell.

We have a USA number and a Canadian virtual number so there is never international long distance to call us from anywhere in north America

and I love the fact that my bill is the same every month no matter how much I call Europe

hands down Vonage rocks for me! some people say they have probs with it I have been the lucky one I guess.

Yngwie 03-11-2008 03:58 PM

we do have voip phone service providers here (sudbury, ontario, Canada),but why would anyone use that shitty service when they can have cable phone service from the cable company and it's nothing like voip. Hell, on my cable modem alone there are 2 pcs and 2 xbox 360's connected to it (router) and even when all 4 things are using up as much of the connection as possible the phone doesn't get affected.

The phone service has its own set of wires withing the entire cable network so the only thing that will ever affect it is a power failure. Of course, the modem comes with a backup battery so even if the power goes out you can still use your phone (a corded one of course)

Everything is done through the new cable modem provided by my isp/cable company. 2 phone jacks are in the back of it along with the coax input.

Yngwie 03-11-2008 03:59 PM

only real advantage voip has is the long distance thing.

Evil E 03-11-2008 03:59 PM

Babaganoosh: That is strange for Skype. When I call someone with mine it either says the phone number is 1234567(cell phones) or the name I chose for Skype on the caller ID(land lines).

Cable phone = VoIP as well. But the technology is better. The thing is that that technology is not portable so not an option for me right now.

yes, cable phone is still voip, but I just used that as an example I just hate the standard voip service.

Evil E 03-11-2008 04:07 PM

I'll just turn the QoS for VoIP on my router, I'm sure that will be allright.

D 03-11-2008 04:11 PM

I've been a customer of theirs (basic service) for almost 3 years and no real complaints.

There was a month where I could hear my voice echo in every third or fourth call... and, of course, when the internet goes down, so does your phone (which kinda sucks)... but those issues have only been temporary and not _really_ in the domain of Vonage...

I've heard their CS sucks, but I've never had cause to use it.

Same here and referred to them by you! :)

No problems here either, several moves, couple numbers added and taken off, I love it. It has saved me countless thousands of dollars so any issues I may have had are nothing compared to the savings.

Elli 03-11-2008 05:10 PM

I had Vonage in 2004-2006. It was a great service. Can even check voicemail from any computer! But when I moved, the new place's cable internet had bad noise on the lines and I had to cancel the service. Other than that I had no complaints at all.

LiveDose 03-11-2008 06:13 PM

I have Vonage and it works great. Also have Packet8 which works very well too.

farkedup 03-11-2008 06:19 PM

seriously horrible experiences with them!

I've used about every VOIP company thats popped up and Vonage is just too expensive for what you get. The past year I've been on skype with an in/out unlimited plan for $75/yr it's not very good but at least its dirt cheap and it works on my mogul CELL PHONE paired with an unlimited data plan which I use when my minutes are wearing thin.

Azlord 03-11-2008 06:28 PM

I'm not a fan of them, and I still have the service. I'm thinking about changing.

Shoehorn! 03-11-2008 07:15 PM

Works good for me. :2 cents:

joeman1 03-11-2008 07:18 PM

I love vonage no bad things to say
