Dedicated Hosting - Hard Drive - Biz Thead!

Hey everyone! So hosting providers, I was wondering...

Lets say that I have a dedicated server with you, and I want another
160GB Hard Drive to add there.

What are my options and the costs ofcurse :)

Thanks to everyone who participating / Just want to see the numbers... :winkwink:

on an existing server ... will cost you from 5.00 to 20.00 a month.....

Well, first off, the case needs to have space.

Second off, hard drives are getting pretty cheap these days, the 160 GB hard drive is not bad at all. We don't even offer it any more, we are at 250 GB now. In my opinion, the 500 GB hard drives are pretty much the best bang for your buck, for the typical user. Not too much that it's crazy available space, and quite affordable.

Third, most companies will charge a one-time installation fee along with the charge of the hard drive.

I can get you an up to date price come Monday when I talk to my supplier, but really, I would go with a larger drive.

Lets assume the server is up and I already have there 250, I just want an extra 160 OR 250.

Give me prices :)

Thanks for your message directfiesta!

just as an example (randomly selected) :

it is cheaper to begin with it

Your best bet is to buy one, ship it to your host and have them install it (unless they quote you a purchase price that is inline with what you can buy it for). Paying monthly is a joke. If your host will not install it for free then find a new host that does not nickel and dime you to death and wants your business.

I have servers that are not colo that I have sent ram and drives for and the host has installed them for me.

adonthenet you would need to know the chassis the server is in and what it can handle...it may not have additional drive bays depending upon how old or new it is. Contact your host see what you have and take it from there. The price for an additional should be minimal depending upon the type and size of course.

$100 one time fee

Ycaza 03-08-2008 09:07 PM

15 bucks a month generally

or about 100 one time

Snake Doctor 03-08-2008 09:46 PM

Depends on if you want ide, scsi, or sata.

I'm guessing that the quotes you got here are for IDE, the cheapest kind.

d-null 03-08-2008 10:07 PM

many hosting companies won't allow you to supply your own hardware

rowan 03-08-2008 10:40 PM

Depends on your host, some will charge you a once off fee (or install it gratis if you're a good customer), others will want to charge a monthly fee.

I personally think that paying $30 a month ($1080 if you have it for 3 years) for an additional hard drive is a bit rich, but I've had it pointed out to me that it's not purely a capital cost since the drive consumes extra power and generates heat which must be dissipated. It's nowhere near $30 a month though, otherwise the base price for servers consuming 300-400 watts would be $1000+ per month

rowan 03-08-2008 10:41 PM

BTW... about 18 months ago theplanet quoted me $60/mo for a 200GB IDE drive...

rowan 03-09-2008 06:06 PM

Bump to see more opinions

$60/mo for 3 years = $2160 for a 200GB drive

from what i remember the planet sells servers cheap and makes their $$$ from upgrades / overage charges.

its like when dell has a $399 computer deal and wants $100 to upgrade ram
