Best Frontman of all time?

I was having a debate with Punchbunny Dave on ICQ and it made me curious what y'all thought.. who is the best frontman of all time?

I came up with:
Freddy Mercury
Mick Jagger
and a few more..

Dave says it's hands down Axl Rose..

What do you guys think?

MaDalton 03-07-2008 05:18 PM

freddy and mick are definitely in the top 5 - i might add jim morrison

Twisted Dave 03-07-2008 05:19 PM

Axl Fucking Rose ... YA!

I love Freddy Mercury ... he's my number 2.

It's only personal opinion, but damn, Axl can put on a fucking show. And the recorded works ... including The Spagetti Incident, and the Chinese Democracy demo's I have all rock!!!

:)

Layne Staley - Alice in Chains

Too bad he's dead.

L-Pink 03-07-2008 05:21 PM

Jagger !

Vegas Ken 03-07-2008 05:21 PM

David Lee Roth in his prime.
Axl Rose
Mick Jagger
Perry Ferrell
Steven Tyler

Brother Bilo 03-07-2008 05:25 PM

Definetely David Lee Roth

Phil Anselmo
Joey Belladonna
Bruce Dickenson

I know there are more though.

Furious_Male 03-07-2008 05:26 PM

Axl was good.. I don't know if I could pick a single best of all time. Bon Scott would probably be my favorite. A few others worth throwing in the mix.

David Lee Roth
Bruce Dickinson
Ted Nugent
Ozzy Osbourne
Bono
Frank Zappa
Hendrix..

The list goes on..

Fap 03-07-2008 05:26 PM

TOTALLY forgot about diamon dave.. David Lee Roth takes the cake

Lee 03-07-2008 05:30 PM

I think Perry Farrell is incredibly dynamic but both Freddie and Axl in their pomp were exceptional. Of the bands Ive seen live Jagger was great but Maynard from Tool seemed so stand-offish yet unbelieveably cool that he takes some beating. There was almost a kind of arrogance but mixed in with sheer brilliance.

Fap 03-07-2008 05:37 PM

What about more recent frontmen?

Brother Bilo 03-07-2008 05:39 PM

If this is a countdown of all time, there shouldn't be an recent frontmen on here. The music that comes out now sucks. Just crappy rehashes of bands that are already listed here imo.

Nah, that's a terrible thing to think.

I love LOADS of new bands. You could say that Aerosmith was just a rehash of the stones, with more gain on the amps ...

Too many people dismiss new music ... and that's narrow minded.

Open up to new stuff and you'll hear plenty of cool shit. :)

stickyfingerz 03-07-2008 05:48 PM

While it wasnt a band my vote goes to Garth Brooks hands down.. :2 cents:

F U S I O N 03-07-2008 05:49 PM

Definitely DLR. I think if you look in the dictionary under frontman, his pic should be there.

What about David Coverdale?

CosmicTang 03-07-2008 05:54 PM

Axl Rose. They were never my fave band, but that guy was electrifying when he brought his A game.

Well, I guess I'm basing that opinion on what I hear on the radio, which is lame. I'm not up on local and underground music anymore, so my guess is that's where the newer groups that actually sound good are.

So, I change my statement. New mainstream music sucks, unless they all just choose their lamest songs for radio play.

I have been to a lot of concerts and seen a lot of front men over the years. to me there is a big difference between being a great front man an a great singer. A great front man has to have charisma, presence, energy and the ability to make everyone in a packed arena feel like they are the only person there.

The short list, for me, would be:
Axl Rose (the guy was flat out amazing when he wanted to be)
Springsteen (although not really a front man unless he was with the E Street Band, he is still raw and powerful live)
Roth (the guy was electric and could light a room up just by walking on stage)
Eddie Vedder (not big on the performace stuff, but he is a bundle of raw power and emotion when he sings)

All of these guys are great and there are others worth mentioning as some above said, Jagger, Mercury and Ozzy come to mind, but when I think front man the name at the top of my list is Bono.

I have seen them several times and the guy in amazing. He has charisma in spades, energy, a great voice and presence like nobody else I have ever seen. I have seen him in front of 50 feet of TV screens wearing a mirrored jacket and doing something over the top that is blowing people's minds then 2 songs later he has just a spotlight on him and is singing a slow, powerful song, and he makes an arena with 20,000 people in it feel like a 200 capicity club.

I guess he got a little too deep into the rendition of man in the box.

If we're talking about just a fun show all together, I have to say that it was Journey. Neil does OK, but the new guy could never replace Steve.

GrouchyAdmin 03-07-2008 06:12 PM

Bleh.. GFY, GFY.

Gunni 03-07-2008 06:14 PM

I'd like to add Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull to the list

tabasco 03-07-2008 06:16 PM

Mike Patton

If we're talking Rock, I've got to go with Jagger. I fucking love Diamond Dave, and I'd put him at a close #2 to Jagger...but Jagger was doing it long before Roth, and he's still at it...hard not to give him the top spot for that.

I'm in general agreement with everyone else on the top 5, except for Axl...Axl fucked up way too much. Looking back on Guns from today's perspective, it's all about Slash.

Im surprised no one offered up Robert Plant...
