How can you see a doctor in the UK (NHS) if you are a foreigner?

I go to school here in England, and am supposed to be here for 1 year. Anyone know if I need to register or anything to see a doctor and get a prescription? How does it work? (Im Canadian)

I am from canada too. I was visiting my family in december when i needed a prescription drug. I just went in to the walk in clinic and i got the prescription, no questions asked. I told i dont live there and i still got the sevice for free and my drugs that normally cost over $100 in toronto cost me 6.95 pounds, the general fee. What a heaven! And canadians think their system is the best...

many years ago I lived there for 6 months, once I had to see a doctor - I paid 15 pounds (its probably 100 now) and once I had to go to ER - free
