Bloggers - Beware of possible Nigerian Online Advertising Fraud

This is mainly for mainstream bloggers with tons of traffic, but worth the post so that you all can pass it along

------------------------

Tony Hung has a post that is worth keeping in mind if you are approached by someone wanting to place display or text advertising on your blog - it looks like Nigerian Email Scammers are targeting site owners with offers to buy advertising. They send them a check (a bad one) as payment that is for an amount higher than the agreed value of the deal and when they ask for a refund the site owner is left out of pocket. Tony has the full details.

Criminal masterminds. We're too smart for them here though :)

yet, I was getting hundreds of those, but I thought it was just to collect valid e-mails.

anyone that would take a check for advertising on a blog is an idiot to begin with, unless it is from a reputable company with plenty of references

Lol, thats the exact same method they use to try and scam a few thousand times a day on Craigslist. They auto respond to thousands of auctions with a desire to secure the product being sold, then send them a bogus check saying for more and ask them to send the difference back to them.

Exactly, and if someone sends me a check with a wrong ammount, I trash it and ask them to resend it. All payments of $500+ from people I don't know by wire only. If someone doesn't have a proper bank account to send a wire :321GFY Below $500 paypal is fine. Call me paranoid.

I get an email every other day looking to buy banner or text ads, I have never answered them I fingered they were all some sort of scam. I googled the name and company name and could never find anything

We had a guy try that scam on us, We told him to send us a cashers check and he said no problem then he sent this check.

Funny thing was he didn't ask how much the ad cost or tell us what to put in the ad:1orglaugh

also heard of the one where they overpay on a car bought on ebay and ask to send the difference back.
