Bandwidth charges? dedicated server hosting

Hi, I'm pretty new in the whole webmaster thing.

What are the current prices for dedicated server hosting services.
Lets say 1000GB a month, then if its increased how much additional paid per GB.
Or lets say 2000GB a month.
Unlimited - does it exist at all?

Set up fee?
Transfer to new server fee?
All the protection? Proper fast support?

Thank you for your recommendations! :thumbsup

Like the price of automobiles, hosting prices may vary greatly. I'll just present you some guidelines:

Bandwidth - (1 mbps = ~320 gigs) depending on provider(s), number of providers, etc. can run anywhere between 10 - 100 dollars per mbps but expect 20 - 40 dollars with most hosts.

Setup Fees - Most hosts offer free setup these days. For those that do not, it is usually not too expensive.

Transfers - Most hosts will happily (or un-happily) do it for you.

It sounds like you need / want something managed. Expect managed services to cost between 25 and 100 dollars per month.

There are many fine hosts that post here and some not so fine. It pays to do your homework.

Anyhow, feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

First of all, equipment will be a big variable in the price ( low $$$ for low end celeron, high $$$ for quad-core , memory, raid and so on ).

As for bandwith, if you choose a fix allocation of 1000 GB/month, you will be able to peak usage to 10mbps ( or even 100 if you have such a port ). Once you reach your allocation, fees per gigs can vary from anything to 0.60/gig.
You can also purchase an extra 500 gigs block for about 25.00.

Or you can choose a dedicated connection, which means you are capped to that connection. So if 3mbps gives about 900 gigs/month, it is most probable that you will not be using it all, unless you hit the cap, in that case users will have a long wait or sever not reachable.

First, establish what you need as equipment, then what you need as bandwith.

edba so far you have been given pretty good advice, so take it for what it is worth. Without more details there are to many variables to to give you a precise quote. Remember that if you are just starting out that you can always upgrade, so start within your means and take it from there as needed.:2 cents:

Currently what my client has is this managed hosting from Jupiter Hosting.
Take a look at charges and tell me if my client is being ripped off or what.

The site has a member's area with Flash streaming video (700kbit/sec quality).
We are setting up affiliate program and going to promote it so we want to be able to accomodate the traffic coming.

Any advise will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Juniper is owned by navisite which is a very large/enterprise MSP. The prices you see are not above normal they are average for this industry. I suggest if they want to get lower costs they need to change companies. Navisite is big in DR and managed services.

For that kind of pricing you should be on better hardware with great support. If you want hit me up on icq at 36837470 and I can set you up with a great DELL RAID server from realitychecknetwork.com with super support.

http://colo-cation.com/ Thats where I go. If you are new that is where you need to host. Don't get bambooozeled with low price gimmicks that will leave you stranded or down for days at a time. With no support.

I have my own Dell Poweredge server in my garage too cuz I like to fuck around. Have some crap at godaddy and some at Network solutions, Host Gator And start logic. Stay away from Start Logic for sure. Spammers reside there at Start Logic.

But all my serious shit sits at http://colo-cation.com/

That seems WAY too expensive for 3Mbps if you ask me.

Spudstr
Thank you and all the guys for replies.
At least I know now its not a total rip off but something that a big enterprise company would charge. I'm sure some of you can offer much more competitive prices.
I'll be investigating.

Anyone knows who hosts sites like randyblue.com seancody.com ?
Is there a way to find out a hosting company of any website? (sorry newbie in many questions)

Thanks! :thumbsup
